My Interview with Jordan Peterson

by Judith Curry

My interview on Jordan B Peterson’s podcast is now available.

If you don’t know who Jordan Peterson is, he’s quite an interesting character [Wikipedia]. He is a Canadian psychologist, bestselling author, media commentator, and his podcast has over 6 million subscribers.

Here is a link to the podcast of my interview [link]. Main interview is 1.5 hours; The second additional interview is 30 minutes. In my opinion, the extra 30 minutes was the most interesting part of the interview (at least I got a chance to mention my new book). Climate uncertainty and risk)

Jordan Peterson is currently quite interested in the topic of climate change, he has also done recent interviews with

  • Steve Koonin [link]
  • Richard Lindzen [link]

I haven’t listened to either of these (I’d rather read the interviews than listen to the podcasts), but I hope both are great — both amassed a lot of views, likes, and positive comments on youtube. .

Jordan Peterson’s podcast is pretty much a production, here’s some ‘behind the scenes’ information. We have agreed to start the interview at 8 am local time; I figured this would give me enough time to prepare my actions. The day before the interview, I received an email saying that the production team would be arriving at 6am! A little after 6 a.m., about half a dozen people arrived, the first to shovel the footpath ahead of me (we had heavy snow) so they could bring all the gear in.

The furniture in the selected room has been completely rearranged (they even removed the Christmas decorations from my potted Norfolk tree). Large camera and recording setup. Around 6:45 a.m. the make-up artist/hairstylist arrived. I figured I could wear big Joe Rogan headphones to cover up a bad hair day; no such luck – headphones. I insist on wearing very little makeup and very limited touching my face (trying to control my shingles nerve pain). I have to admit that I look a lot better than usual. The start time was pushed back to 8:30, with about 30 minutes sitting in the interview chair and checking everything.

My dogs had a great time during this setup (and the crew was super friendly), but the dogs and Peter were banished to the bedroom during the actual interview. I must confess that I hadn’t listened to Jordan Peterson’s podcast before, so I was a bit surprised by his interviewing style – he talked a lot and encouraged interviewees to interrupt him (interrupt) Everyone’s words are not my style, but Peter wouldn’t agree.)

All in all, a very enjoyable experience and I think overall a good podcast. It is rapidly accumulating views on youtube, I will double check to see if this is banned by youtube like my previous interview on BizNews, obviously when it hits 500k views.

The comments are quite interesting, check out the most recent comments for a better sampling of weird comments (instead of looking at the most popular ones).

ps I’ve been really busy, unfortunately little time for blog posts. I have a few interesting guest posts in the works, stay tuned.
