Do you like the idea of Ineos . grenade but want it to be electric? Maybe you’re looking for something to replace Bollinger B1-shaped hole in your heart? If so then maybe Munro MK_1 is the electric off-roader for you.

The Munro MK_1 is an all-new Land Rover Defender-esque SUV designed in the UK and will be built in Scotland. It is also fully electric. Oh, and no, it’s not affiliated with Sandy Munro, at least as far as we know. According to the press release, the company is “named after a mountain in Scotland whose elevation exceeds 3000 feet.” So now you can impress everyone on quiz night if that question comes up.

MK_1 (Ugh, can’t they just call it MK1? That would be less annoying to type on.) Comes with two engine options: one making 295 hp and another making 375 horse power. There are also two battery options: 61 kWh and 82 kWh. Just don’t expect much in terms of range. Munro estimates a maximum of 190 miles on a full charge, which according to the company allows for a 16-hour off-road run. On a CCS charger, it can also fully charge in about 30 minutes.

Munro also says the most powerful version will hit 62 mph in 4.9 seconds, but the MK_1 isn’t really built for road use. Since the two-speed transmission is tuned to maximize off-road torque, the top speed is just 80 mph. And the motor actually has a lot of torque. we don’t talk Performance Mercedes-AMG S 63 E figures here, but 516 lb-ft should be plenty for the trails this SUV is designed to traverse.

The motor’s torque also allows the MK_1 to tow up to 7,700 lbs and haul 2,200 lbs of stuff. And while it offers four-wheel drive, you don’t get a motor on each wheel like in Rivian. Instead, there’s a single motor powering a more traditional mechanical 4WD system, which Munro thinks is better for the terrain and easier to maintain.

Traditionally speaking, the MK_1 is built on an old-fashioned ladder frame made from 5mm thick galvanized steel. It also uses direct axles and comes standard with a central locking differential. If you want front and rear differential locking, that is also an available option.

And while the design might look like a couple of drunken men slapping each other in a barn, Munro says it’s by design. The body panels are designed to be easier to repair, as the SUV is designed to last through decades of off-road. Well, we’ve said off-roading again. Did you know for a fact that the MK_1 is designed for off-roading?

As CEO Russell Peterson said:

This technique is not known as agriculture in nature. Some people consider the term agriculture potentially derogatory, but at Munro, we certainly don’t. Farm vehicles have some of the most sophisticated technology you can imagine. But most of all, they are designed to do the job, no matter how much punishment they incur, and to keep doing it year after year. The Munro has been built to the strongest possible standards and will be fully operational for the next 30, 40, 50 years.

And it’s actually pretty good for its intended purpose, too. The MK_1 has a 50/50 weight distribution, 18.9-inch ground clearance, 84-degree approach angle, 51-degree exit angle and 148-degree pass angle. You can also opt for a sturdier roof if you’re worried about tipping over or falling rocks.

Munro also promises plenty of room to take your friends with you on your off-road adventures. There’s seating for five, and with a 130-inch wheelbase, all passengers will have plenty of room. The front seats are designed to slide back far enough so the driver can use the laptop without touching the steering wheel, and even with the front seats fully reclined, Munro promises a legroom for rear passengers.

In terms of storage, the rear cargo area is lined with plywood and features aluminum rails that are said to be sturdy enough to hold 880 lbs of stuff in place. There are also two external storage compartments that Munro calls a “saddle bag compartment” for your charging cables, tools, and dirty gloves.

And while the interior looks as agricultural as the exterior, you do get some modern technology, such as a DC adapter to run the winch or light bar, two USB C sockets, two wireless charging pads, and two power sockets. A household plug that Munro says can be used to power a microwave or a teapot. So, if you don’t want to miss out on tea time while on the trail, Munro’s got you covered. Oh, and the infotainment system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The MK_1 comes with a 5-year/100,000-mile warranty that Munro calls “super-flexible.” According to the statement, “We recognize and respect our customers’ right to repair and service their vehicles, and doing so will not void warranties. Customers who are unable, or unwilling to take care of their vehicle themselves, can bring their Munro to a local dealer or our service team will visit them and do the work on site at their convenience. .”

The company also says it will have a program to restore or replace the batteries when they wear out, saying: “With your average electric vehicle, batteries are designed to extend the life of the vehicle, so in In most cases, the customer will never have to worry about replacing it. But because Munro is designed to last several decades, we will restore or replace the battery pack for our customers when the time comes.”

Prices in the UK start at £49,995 and according to Munro, the MK_1 should arrive in the US in 2023. However, how much it will cost when it finally crosses the pond, remains in the air.
