Multi-lane free toll system in Malaysia – government not aiming to speed up implementation before 2025
The government says it is looking to accelerate the rollout of the multi-lane free toll (MLFF) system in the country. According to works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, the goal is to get the system in place before scheduled to be introduced in 2025an unchanged timeline despite the transition to the new government.
“The timeframe in question is 2025, but I have expressed my view to the (highway) franchisees that if we can accelerate it, maybe we will be able to. do it even earlier than 2025. Of course, many things have to be considered, especially technical as well as in terms of lawvery important things,” he said
Talking to reporters after the launch ceremony TNB Electron DC fast charging network at Ayer Keroh R&R yesterday, he says interactions and discussions are intensifying. Earlier this week, the minister of works hold a meeting with all 32 tolled highway concessionairesplus industry stakeholders and stakeholders on the planned implementation of MLFF in the country.
On whether Malaysia will adopt a dedicated usage system radio frequency identification (RFID) he said the options will be studied in detail. “We’ll look at different systems and compare them with others, but I can’t say if we’ll adopt one. Certainly, our experts will look at those installed in other countries (to determine their feasibility),” he said.
Before the implementation, he said that pilot projects will be implemented. Besides giving authorities and vendors the ability to check for technical and legal issues and resolve them, this will also provide a platform for multi-modal payment testing. through different digital payment providers instead of a single one. This move will end Touch ‘n Go’s current fee-paying monopoly.
“We will do that as soon as possible (because) we have to test the system first to see if it can be used throughout the country. Discussions have also been made with the Ministry of Finance as it will involve financial implications and once all parties are satisfied with the system, a decision will be made,” he said.
