MRT Putrajaya Line goes free until March 31 – FAQ, T&C

The Putrajaya MRT Line was officially opened yesterday by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and Prime Minister announces free rides for 15 days to March 31 on Klang Valley’s second metro line, which opened to the public at 3pm yesterday.

How to go about it? Rapid KL has published some information and FAQs about free rides which they call PFR15. Passengers can enjoy PFR15 by getting tokens from any LRT, MRT, Monorail and BRT counter (basically all of these are operated by Rapid KL) and the token can be used at any station (in or out) related to the Putrajaya MRT Line for a one-way journey.

Touch n Go card and loyalty card users can go in and out of the gate as usual. Customers can also enjoy flat rates at all Park & Ride LRT and MRT facilities during PFR15. However, make sure you tap Park & Ride with the card you’re using for the trains. The PYL feeder bus is also FOC until March 31. The free rides are open to all users, Malaysians and expats.

But since the Putrajaya MRT Line (PYL) is part of the Rapid KL network and not a standalone line, you have more questions and so do we. What if you click on another line and exit at PYL station, vice versa?

According to Rapid, as long as your train journey involves a PYL station or an interchange station, it will be free. The exchange stations listed are Kwasa Damansara, Kampung Selamat, Sungai Buloh, Titiwangsa, Tun Razak Exchange (TRX), Chan Sow Lin and Sungai Besi.

For example, if I tap at MRT Pusat Bandar Damansara (MRT Kajang Line) and go to TRX to catch the PYL train, I can tap on any PYL station and it will be free. Same goes for LRT, Monorail and BRT users.

However – and this is very important for visitors – you must exit the PYL station before returning to where you started. Let’s say the destination is Putrajaya Sentral. When you get to that terminus, press out and press again – if you just sit on the train and wait for it to move back or just check the platform, you won’t get the free ride.

In short, the Putrajaya MRT Line is 57.7 km long with 36 stations. It started in Kwasa Damansara (a new town next to Kota Damansara and Sungai Buloh), has been operating since December 2016 as part of the Kajang Subway Lineand ends at Putrajaya Sentral in the administrative capital of Malaysia.

Yesterday was the launch day of the entire PYL line with the opening of the 38.7 km Phase 2 section. the first phase of the PYL from Kwasa Damansara to Kampung Batu (along Jalan Ipoh) has been running since June 2022. Of the 57.7 km, 44.2 km are elevated, while 13.5 km of the route – in the city center – is underground.

There are a total of 10 interchange/connection stations that link PYL with all existing train lines in KV, from KL Monorail to KLIA Transit. PYL meets the Kajang MRT Line at Kwasa Damansara and TRX. Other transfer stations are at Titiwangsa (KL Monorail, LRT Ampang/Sri Petaling), Chan Sow Lin (LRT Ampang/Sri Petaling) and Sungai Besi (LRT Sri Petaling).

Ampang Park (Kelana Jaya LRT Line) is a connecting station, not a transit station. The difference is that you can change the line at docking stations, but you’ll have to press again. Do not press when you change trains at interchange stations.

Other connecting stations are with routes not operated by Rapid KL. They are at Sungai Buloh and Sri Damansara Timur on the same stretch (KTM Komuter Tg Malim – Port Klang Line), Kampung Batu (KTM Komuter Batu Caves – Pulau Sebang Line) and Putrajaya Sentral (KLIA Transit).

Getting to the metro station is an important part of commuting, and there are 31 feeder bus routes spanning more than 350 kilometers. Fares range from RM1 to RM2.40 (cash only) and discount cardholders get 50% off.

If buses aren’t your thing, 17 terminals have Parking & Ride facilities, for a total of 6,416 parking spaces. The fee is RM 4.30 per entry per day. To enjoy this very reasonable price, one has to use the same Touch n Go card to get in and out of the subway – this is to eliminate non-metro users. Motorbikes pay RM1.10 per day.
