In-Safe driving assistance system very normal now then even the most basic vehicles come with some sort of feature, from lane departure warning for lane keeping assist. But you might not want to quickly entrust your life with some of these features, like they don’tt always work as intended or as good as you think they will. Take automatic emergency braking, like Consumer Reports and check the problem AAA shows that most of these systems do notdoesn’t really work well in a crash when you’re traveling at high speed.

While the electronics required to make the automatic emergency brake work are complex, the way it works is quite simple. Using sensors, vehicles equipped with AEB can usually detect obstacles at a safe enough distance have time to avoid obstacles or come to a complete stop. But Consumer Reports found that most systems won’t work if the vehicle is traveling above 40 mph. Worse, “No one is designed to prevent’T-bones’ accident at an intersection or a left turn on the oncoming road”.

AAA took their test further, testing four popular (and unknown) models. All come with automatic braking. Using fake foam dolls, AAA sets up different crash situations. Their findings were surprising. Are from Consumer Reports:

• At 30 mph, the AEB systems tested prevented rear-end collisions with the dummy vehicle in 17 of the 20 test runs. In the 30 mph run test leading up to a crash, the AEB reduced the crash speed by an average of 86%.

• At 40 mph, AEB prevented rear-end collisions in just 6 of the 20 test runs and reduced crash speeds by an average of 62%.

• In a 30 mph perpendicular collision at an intersection, also known as a T-bone collision, the AEB does not prevent or lessen the impact of any collision.

• AEB also does not prevent or reduce the impact of any collision involving a left turn in front of an oncoming vehicle.

So if it doesn’t seem to work as intended, what’s the problem? Jennifer Stockburger, director of the Consumer Reports vehicle testing center, marked that automatically-Braking is still beneficial in that it can slow the vehicle down, reducing the impact of a collision that leads to less serious injuries.

But if you are a smart driver, You don’t need a professional test to tell you the obvious: DoN’Don’t rely on your vehicle’s technology to save your life. While the technology we have today is impressive and advanced, no technology can explain the human element of simply paying attention while driving.
