More than half of new UK cars will be electric by 2028 in a bid to phase out petrol and diesel

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

Fantastic!

According to the Government, more than half of all cars in the UK must be electric by 2028, as it looks to underpin plans for the Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) mandate.

Grant Shapps is looking to set legally binding goals to accelerate the transition away from Petroleum and diesel oiland towards mass adoption tram. In its new report, the Department of Transport has proposed legally binding annual targets car Manufacturers will be forced to respond by 2035.

In less than eight years, the Government will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK.

Just five years later, a similar ban will be introduced to limit the sale of hybrid cars.

The proposed plan would start in 2024, when manufacturers will have to sell all-electric cars, which account for 22% of their total sales.

The Government document adds: “There is a degree of uncertainty based on the form of broader policy measures and future needs, but the model assumes that by 2030, at least 80% of all UK new car sales are zero-emissions.

“It assumes a duty of 22% in 2024 and 52% in 2028.

“Along with ZEV absorption, it also assumes further efficiency improvements for non-ZEVs.”

By 2030, the European Union projects about 46% of all new car sales to be ZEVs across the EU.

The document states that the UK is the leading ZEV market in Europe, so above average would be expected.

The Engine Manufacturers and Traders Association said the new regulations “must encourage consumers to buy, not just compel manufacturers to produce”.

“The danger is that consumers won’t be motivated to buy these new cars in the quantities they need, keeping their older, more polluting cars for long,” said SMMT CEO Mike Hawes. further, thereby undermining the carbon savings this regulation seeks to provide.”

If this isn’t an admission that for most drivers EVs are completely useless, I don’t know what is!

It also raises questions about how these quotas will be enforced. After all, car manufacturers can’t force people to buy electric cars. And we already know that big discounts don’t make any difference, because the government has tried them.

I’ve read rumors that manufacturers will be fined if they don’t hit their targets, which simply means these will be added to the price of regular cars, to the detriment of motorists. If that were the case, people would simply be inclined to buy replacement imported cars, who would probably not be affected by the quota.

This whole business is an example that we are all slowly losing our freedom of choice.
