Danville, Father. – Please see the statement from primate scientist and PETA Science Advisor, Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel on the news that yesterday’s truck crash in Pennsylvania involved 100 monkeys has just been brought to the US from Mauritius and has not been quarantined:

US experimenters are playing with fire and the rest of us could get burned. Monkeys littered the highway during a truck crash in Danville, PA, Friday afternoon — in crates some people looked at or touched without any protective gear — just arrived from Mauritius on the same day. They have not been quarantined, their health has not been assessed, and no one knows what pathogens they contain. Anyone who has read Hot zone by Richard Preston learned that in 1989, dozens of imported monkeys were sent to Hazelton Laboratories in Reston, VA – later known as Covance and since acquired by Envigo – carrying a strain of the virus. Ebola withdrawal never seen before. Four people got sick, and all the monkeys were killed. Ebola-Reston was brought back into the United States, this time to Texas, by another monkey. Importing monkeys and torturing them in laboratories is likely to cause more diseases in humans than testing on them will never prevent.
