Modern Game, Battle of Emmanuel in Maker’s Mark Mile

Europe is home to Modern game but North America seems to be where his heart goes.

Godolphin’s hybrid scored 3-3-1 in 10 race starts in England and France — a good record but one that pales in comparison to what he has done in the United States and Canada, where he’s perfect in three starts, all at the level 1 company. He was honored last year for those accomplishments with the Eclipse Awards as North America’s men’s field champion.

On April 14, intern Charlie Appleby will be prioritized to improve to a quad on this side of the Atlantic as he takes on seven opponents in the $600,000 Maker’s Mark Mile (G1T) at Keeneland.

“He just seems to come alive when he’s here,” says Chris Connett, Appleby’s tour leader. “He shows his game-like face when he shows up here.”

At the age of 2, he won the 2021 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1T) at Del Marand last year at the age of 3 he won the Woodbine Mile (G1T) in Canada and the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1T) when Keeneland was the host of the Breeders’ Cup track.

William Buick, his regular racer, makes the trip to Kentucky to ride his son dubawi in his debut season. The modern game has been out of racing since the November 5 Breeders’ Cup.

The pony has proven to be new, having won the Emirates Poule d’Essai des Poulains (G1) last May at ParisLongchamp in his first race in 2022 on his return from Breeders’ scores’ His first cup.

Dry weather is forecast through Friday. The grass field is definitely suitable for the Modern Game.

A handful of competitors offer remarkable information.

Eclipse’s Purebred Partner’ Scout disappointed the Hollywood Derby (G1T) last year and finished third in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational Stakes (G1T) in his only start of 2023 in January; Lael’s stables Chez Pierre be a quick small bet winner with a 5 to 6 record; WinStar Farm and Siena . Farm Emmanuel has scored graded bet wins in three of his last four games since moving to grass; by Peter Brant Dr. Zemph was a group 3 winner in Ireland last year and won stylishly at its US debut in March; and Bonne Chance Farm and Stud RDI’s in love won a point 1 on Keeneland in the fall of 2021.

Dr. Zemph and Emmanuel seem to be the most feared opponents of the Modern Game.

The former could give Brant and coach Chad Brown a second Maker’s Mark win after their initial success with raging bull in 2021. I’m 4 years old dark Angel gelding continued to compete in Europe before being imported to the US and placed in group 1 in 2021. Accustomed to running shorter distances abroad, he finished fifth in the one-mile race. their own, though on weak ground.

In his first start for Brown, Dr. Zemph won the 7 1/2 option rights race about two turns at Gulfstream Park March 10 under Tyler Gafflione, who resumed the tour on Friday.

Emmanuel cuts back a bit on the trip after a pair of wins this year at 1 1/16 miles on grass in Florida. After his course-record win at Tampa Bay Stakes (G3T) on February 4, he overcame traffic challenges to win Canadian Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream on March 4.

Javier Castellano, four-time Maker’s Mark winner, returns as Hall of Fame coach Todd Pletcher.

Pletcher and Castellano teamed up to win the race in 2015 with Gary Barber’s Jack Milton and in 2017 with WinStar Farm’s patriotic americans .
