Missing dog rescued after few days in snowy Colorado mountains
Every year, Curtis Culver and his brother plan a backpacking trip to Grand County, Colorado. Culver’s dog, Stella, often tags along. This trip is their 20th year so far, but the first year they have encountered dangerous weather conditions. The three of them had to evacuate to escape a severe blizzard, but when help arrived, Stella panicked. Culver panicked when he was forced to leave her behind.
An intelligent and resourceful puppy, Stella survived 5 days in the snowy mountains of Colorado. But when help finally arrived, she felt relieved and ready to take the longest nap of her life.
Adventure Gone Wrong
Culver and his brother know that there will be snow on their adventure. But what was supposed to be three inches has turned into six to ten. So they called for help and rescue officials arrived as quickly as they could. But amid all the uproar, Stella ran away in fear. The weather conditions were too risky for Culver to stay and look for the puppy.
“My brother and I weren’t confident enough in our ability to start and maintain our blaze in 18-degree weather,” Culver said. “It’s just the emptiness you feel inside knowing you’re not going to leave with all the life you’ve come to.”
So the search and rescue team brought the brothers to safety but had to leave Stella behind. Then, after making the necessary preparations, the team returned to the mountains and began their 14-mile hike, looking for Stella along the way.
Stella protects herself
It took about four hours for rescuers to reach the campsite where Culver had stopped. Five days after Stella ran away, the team found her not far from the campsite. She seems to be doing fine even though she’s been through it all.
When Culver saw her for the first time in five days, he was overjoyed. He ran to her and showered her with hugs and kisses. Now, she’s back in the comfort of her home, as pampered as she can be. She is also getting a well-deserved break.
“I love her,” Culver said. “Honestly, if I could take her everywhere I go.”
While Stella was alone, she was wearing a backpack with food and snacks inside. Culver believes she found access to food during her time alone. It’s amazing what dogs can do when faced with a difficult situation!
