Rachel Maclean, protection minister, told Sky News’ Kay Burley that are some of the ways households can “protect themselves” when prices soar.

But she added: “Over the long term, we need to plan to grow the economy and make sure that people can better protect themselves – whether that’s by working overtime or switching to a new job. jobs get paid more, but that’s what we’re focused on as a government.”

She added: “In the past, we often hear people face budget issues as one of the obstacles – and it may not be for everyone. – being able to work longer hours or even switch to a higher paying job.

“Of course, it’s an individual situation, depending on that particular family situation but that’s why job centers exist, that’s why work coaches exist. Now, that’s why we put support into those job centers – to work with individuals in their own individual situations.

“So it might work for some people – they can access overtime.

“But of course it won’t work for people who already have three jobs.”

Aid given to schools and through local authorities, she said, will go towards assistance “where it is most needed”.

Ms Maclean added: “We’ve taken action to help those with energy bills and more help is coming.”
