Mini Cooper Electric 2025 redesigned to add driving range, space

The next-generation electric Mini will add more space and potentially more driving range, in an upcoming redesign, the brand revealed on Thursday.

The redesigned Mini Cooper Electric, as mentioned in a press release from parent company Mini BMW, is expected to launch in 2025. In addition to a replacement for the current Mini Cooper SE, a Cooper model E will also be included, with different battery packs and power supplies for both. Mini USA declined to comment to Green Car Reports about the product’s future for the US market.

As the base model, the Cooper E produces 181 hp—the same as the current Cooper SE. In turn, the next-generation Cooper SE increases to 214 hp.

Battery capacity is 40.7 kWh for Cooper E and 54.2 kWh for Cooper SE. The Mini is targeting a range of 186 miles to 248 miles, which can be measured against the European WLTP test cycle. For reference, the Mini Cooper SE 2023 is rated at 114 miles by the EPA.

The electric models will once again be based on a two-door hatchback body style, but BMW claims more cargo volume and retains the same four seats. While not quite “mini” compared to the original version of the 1960s, the interior space is still at a premium level on the modern Mini.

BMW claims the current Mini Cooper SE has become the brand’s most popular model since its launch in 2020. According to the automaker, global sales have grown by 25.5% in 2022. to more than 43,000 units, meaning one in five new Minis is electric.

Cooper SE is one of the five cheapest electric cars for the U.S. market and is one of the few small cars that is actually widely available as a complete EV, rather than as a compliant car. Chevrolet’s recent announcement Bolt EV will be discontinued further limit the options in that area. However, last year’s Mini model was not able to make the cheapest SE version, because supply chain problem.

ONE converted version of the Cooper SE is now in actual production — albeit for Europe and in small numbers. A whole family of electric Mini crossovers is also coming, but they will coexist with gas and diesel models for several years. The brand says it plans to switch entirely to electric vehicles by the early 2030s.
