Looks like former multi-division star Mikey Garcia packed it up and called it a career. Although no public announcement has been made, Garcia’s private Instagram page calls the 40-2 boxer “World Championship 126, 130, 135, 140 lbs.” Garcia has never been the type to flaunt, so it’s easy to see the 34-year-old announcing his retirement from that angle. Assuming the famous Garcia is indeed retired, there’s no doubt he’s had one of the more impressive ring careers in recent memory. Disciplined and self-determined, Garcia is a serious man in the sport that often displays delusional behavior.
Garcia won his first world title – the WBO featherweight belt – when he beat the rugged Orlando Salido in January 2013. In November of the same year, the California native moved up to lightweight and won. WBO world title in round 1/8. take down Roman Martinez. The legal conflict with the top promotion kept Garcia out of the ring for more than two years, from 2014 to 2016. On his return, Garcia knocked out Elio Rojas in a match, then won the WBC world lightweight belt. 2017 by knocking out the defending champion. Dejan Zlaticanin in three.
In 2017, Garcia met the biggest rival of his career to date, Adrien “The Problem” Broner. Garcia delivered on what he considers one of his top performances by defeating his colorful foes and securing a decisive unanimous victory. The following year, Garcia won the IBF lightweight championship through a decisive match against Sergey Lipinets, then successfully defeated the talented Robert Easter four months later for the WBC and IBF lightweight titles. The following year, Garcia dared to go great when he faced off against welterweight king Errol Spence for Spence’s IBF title.
It proved to be a bridge to reach, as Spence easily handled Garcia on his way to a decisive unanimous victory. Coming back from his first defeat, Garcia knocked out former player Jessie Vargas the following year in a weight division match. That will be Garcia’s final victory, as the barely known Sandor Martin may have been best for him by majority decision in October 2021. And now Garcia, the quiet man of the right. he announced his retirement. If the passion is gone, he is wise to walk away. Garcia has always been a man of intentions – and thinking about the future is always important. Here’s hoping he enjoys a long and productive life outside of the ring.
