“The highly anticipated upcoming boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson will unfortunately be postponed.” That’s what Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions claimed in Friday’s press release. Reason? The ulcer flared, Mike Tyson reports, which occurred while the former heavyweight champion was on a plane to Los Angeles last week. “In a follow-up consultation on Thursday with medical professionals regarding his recent ulcer flare-up, the recommendation for Mike Tyson is for minimal to light exercise over the next few weeks.” With that in mind, the statement states that Tyson will be ready to enter full training in the near future.
“Both Mike and Jake agreed that it would be fair to ensure that both athletes had equal training time to prepare for this important match,” the statement continued. “The health and wellness of our athletes is our top priority and we fully support Mike in taking the time necessary for him to perform at the level he expects of himself .” A new date has not yet been set, but the press release says “the new date will be announced next Friday, June 7.”
Of course, the idea of a Tyson vs. Paul fight doesn’t please everyone. Boxing is a dangerous sport – and it only gets more dangerous as fighters get older. Tyson will be closer to sixty than fifty if and when he and Paul actually go down in the ring. On the other hand, Paul was only in his twenties. And while he certainly doesn’t have the same illustrious background as Tyson, Paul is not without talent, nor is he without power. In other words, people shouldn’t be surprised if Tyson gets injured in his fight with Paul (for whatever reason).
With all that said, sometimes people tend to get stuck in their memories. So many people are expecting the Tyson who defeats Michael Spinks to be Tyson taking on a guy thirty years younger than him. Maybe that’s why the show can continue. People want to see the old Mike Tyson, even though that Mike Tyson has long passed away. People also wanted to see rude Paul get what they believed he deserved…that was out. However, we don’t always have to get what we want. Again, boxing is a dangerous sport.
