Mike Jones tops ASBK in Bustling Hidden Valley

Wayne Maxwell lined up with top champ Mike Jones on the grid in Darwin with the desire to further drop the YRT men’s championship lead from 22 points. Grid third-placer Bryan Staring also finished third in the championship chase heading into this first 16-round encounter at Hidden Valley weekend. Staring was quick out of the blocks on Friday and looks to have the pace to also be a strong contender for victory.

Josh Waters was only ahead by a millisecond despite some problems yesterday causing him to lose almost all of his trading session. The Mildura man is by far the most successful rider around the 2.8km Hidden Valley. Cru Halliday and Troy Herfoss also showed good pace, but the riders in the second row did not show the same pace as those in the front row.

Arthur Sissis has traditionally been fast in the third row ahead of Daniel Falzon and Lachlan Epis while Glenn Allerton is in fourth with Mark Chiodo and Anthony West.

Josh Waters had a great warm-up in the second row but Bryan Staring had his best warm-up in the front row to take the lead through the first round for the first time. Maxwell was second but was overtaken by Jones early in the opening round. It looks like Glenn Allerton almost ran up behind Maxwell at the end of the lap and was side by side with his teammates.

When they started round three, it was still Staring, Jones, Maxwell, Waters and Allerton but Josh Waters set the pace, 65,499 for the Maxima Oils BMW man.

Troy Herfoss got faster and faster as the race progressed and was the fastest driver in lap four before overtaking Arthur Sissis in the next lap to advance to sixth, 1.8 seconds behind the leader.

Mike Jones then overcame Bryan Staring to take the lead after hitting 65,578 in lap six. Wayne Maxwell edged past Bryan Staring in turn but Staring fell behind him to push Maxwell back into third place again.

The lead trio were almost side by side at the end of the main line but Jones braked several times later and also brought in extra speed in turn one and from there he started to run away from his pursuers.

Troy Herfoss overcame both Glenn Allerton and Josh Waters midway through the race to move up to fourth place. Wayne Maxwell then made a mistake that sent Herfoss up to third and Maxwell is now being chased by two Maxima Oils BMW drivers. It seems that the Ducati Boost Mobile racer has definitely had some problems.

Mike Jones continued to push ahead in the lead and with five laps, there was only two seconds in the Staring. While the rest of the yard has now run to 66s, Troy Herfoss is the only man still in his 65s and ending with the Stars enlisted program.

Jones then backed off somewhat, which allowed Staring to close the gap to 1.2 seconds but was still chased hard by Herfoss. The distance is only two tenths behind Staring and Herfoss with two laps…

With two laps to run, Jones’ lead has been shortened to just under a second and Herfoss is within a staggering distance of second place Staring. Herfoss made his move under Staring late on that penultimate lap to advance to second and then collectively kept it into the main line but a small slip back to the station allowed Staring to overtake him. down the straight line.

Herfoss overtakes Staring on the sixth turn in the final round and then repeats the same move he did in the previous round to take second place a few turns from the end, Staring tries to come back below Herfoss on the last round. but defeated Herfoss and had to pull out of the move to save both himself and Herfoss.

Mike Jones was the winner and while the time showed a gap of 3.2 seconds, it was only that large due to the clash between Staring and Herfoss on the final turn which slowed both down, they closed in the ring. a second ahead of Jones so the win isn’t quite as clear-cut as the results show. That said, Jones controlled pace from the front and could have also sped up his sleeve more to call in if he needed to.

Wayne Maxwell came in fourth to limit damage but there were clearly some issues holding him back on Boost Mobile Ducati. Maxwell kept second in the championship but Jones extended his buffer period to 30 points with that win. Maxwell was not eager to explain what his problem was and told us, ‘No excuses, just not good enough‘.

Glenn Allerton will be encouraged but also somewhat disappointed with the fifth place but his Maxima Oils BMW teammate Josh Waters will be more discouraged. Waters looked like they could have an early race winning pace and scored the fastest lap but ended up falling back into eighth place, however, there were some positives for both themselves and the team as they towards two 16 lap races tomorrow. Both of their problems stem from hot temperatures. When in battle around other racers, the standard radiators (radiator radiators are not allowed in ASBK), struggle to keep their engines cool and the ECU reduces their power and with it their potential.

Cru Halliday took sixth place by edging out Arthur Sissis by a few bicycles and underscoring how close the field was actually in that competition, that pair was just six seconds and four seconds behind the race winner. 16 lap distance from the back podium.

Daniel Falzon was ninth and had achieved a high 65 in the race but ended up finishing only 15 seconds behind the leader, so will be more sought after tomorrow.

Lachlan Epis made the top 10 ahead of Anthony West and Max Stauffer.

Hidden Valley ASBK TV Fixtures

In 2022, Fox Sports Australia will broadcast nearly every session on track plus all races.

As has happened in previous years, Channel 7 will broadcast races one and three live alongside regular Supercars TV coverage.

Following the event, ASBK TV will work with AVE TV production partners to create a special replay edition of ASBK Round 4 – Darwin. This special edition will air on SBS – Sunday, July 3, 1300 – 1500 AEST.
