Michigan State calls Oxford shooting victim Tate Myre a member of the 2022 recruiting class

Michigan State began the initial signing phase by honoring one of the victims of the Oxford High School shooting.

Spartan coach Mel Tucker said in a video on Twitter that the team will recognize Tate Myre as the first member of the 2022 class. Myre is a footballer for Oxford. Myre, Hana St. Juliana, Justin Shilling and Madisyn Baldwin were four students shot and killed on November 30 at the high school.

“We are honored to recognize the Tate Myre as the first Spartan Dawg of the 2022 class,” Tucker said in the video. “A Spartan Dawg is defined not by the style of play they perform on the field, but by the character they display, the leadership they bring to their team and community, and to extraordinary individuals like Tate Myre, their heroism Tate was, and always will be, a Spartan dog.

According to Detroit Free PressSoccer and wrestling coach Ross Wingert said on the day of the shooting, Myre ran toward the gunman to try to disarm him.

“I told them Tate was the fastest, most athletic kid at that school,” Wingert said, according to the report. “There’s no way he couldn’t get out of there if he wanted to. He would be the number 1 candidate to be able to run out of that school if he wanted to. I know Tate chose to do what he thought was right and he made the ultimate sacrifice. “

Michigan State is the latest team to honor the victims of the shooting. Michigan honors Myre by wearing patches with the number 42 on their shirt – 42 being Myre’s number in high school – with four hearts on the patch representing the four victims. The The lions have won the first of the season for the Oxford community. During their pregnancy, they wore Oxford hats and shirts, with decals on the back of their helmets to honor the victims.

The Free Press reported that Myre had been invited to audition for the Michigan State-Penn State game, and Tucker said that Myre wanted to play for Sparta. He is a member of the 2023 army recruitment.

“Tate Myre has a spirit of work, sportsmanship and boundless love for his teammates,” said Tucker. “He has the passion to play for Michigan State one day. His passion is paired with an unstoppable drive and the pursuit to get there. Tate’s steadfastness. on and off the field has lifted all those who knew him, the loved ones of Hana St. Juliana, Justin Shilling, Madisyn Baldwin and Tate Myre. And we will continue to support the Oxford community in every way we can. can.”
