Norwegian company Nel Hydrogen has announced that it will build an approximately $400 million manufacturing facility in Michigan. The plant will be the first in the United States to manufacture an electrolyzer, which uses electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Nel cites the short distance from partner General Motors as one of the factors behind the choice.

Based on MLive. com, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer met with Nel Hydrogen executives in January to campaign for the state’s choice on an investment trip to Norway and Switzerland. The company evaluated several possible locations across the US before Michigan chosen. However, an exact location in the state has yet to be decided.

in a statementWhitmer says:

“We are excited to bring home an investment of up to $400 million from Nel Hydrogen, creating more than 500 high-paying, clean energy jobs right here in Michigan. Earlier this year, I went on an economic trip to Europe to show the world what Michigan has to offer, and thanks to our efforts on the trip, we received an investment from Nel to continues to build on our leadership in automotive, chip, and clean energy. As a major player in all three of these areas, Michigan is serious about leading the way in hydrogen development, and winning today’s investment proves that the best manufacturing in the world happens right here in Michigan. .”

The facility with 90% capacity will support approximately 1.4 million cars on a regular basis. It should be noted that there are currently no hydrogen vehicle refueling stations in Michigan. Based on US Department of Energy, 57 hydrogen stations across the country. There are 56 locations in California and a single station in Hawaii.

The Nel facility will help Michigan move toward its goal of establishing a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. Even so, the state is incentivizing financing for an alternative fuel source for existing private vehicles. considered inferior compared to electric cars.
