MG details the Toyota Corolla-sized electric hatch

The Chinese-owned MG brand has revealed its arguably most exciting car to date in Australia – the all-new electric car Grade 4.

Due to local touchdown in second half of 2023the Grade 4 the same size as a hyundai i30 or any other small hatchback on the market, and is the first MG built on the automaker’s new modular platform (MSP) specifically for zero-emission vehicles.

While that makes it smaller than ZS EV crossover and so it’s easy to assume that the MG 4 hatch could turn out to be Australia’s cheapest EV – but that may not be the case, says Rick Whaite, MG’s marketing boss.

“Cheapest isn’t necessarily our preference, it’s about value. As MG always does, we will do our best to ensure that it is an extremely attractive proposition for the market,” said Mr Whaite.

Interestingly, the MG 4 is already on sale in the UK and is £3500 cheaper than the base MG ZS EV, or about $A6000. This same electric SUV debuts in Australia for $46,990 driving awaysuggesting a price around $40,000 is at least a possibility.

However, the rear-wheel-drive MG 4 will likely launch in three model types, using two battery sizes, with pricing to be confirmed closer to the vehicle’s launch later in the year.

The spec sheet lists an MG 4 51 with a 51kWh battery for a 350km range under the stricter WLTP cycle, a 64kWh MG 4 64 with a 450km range, and an MG 4 LUX uses the same 64kWh battery but has a range of 430km.

MG Motor Australia is also looking at additional variants, including a dual-engine hot-hatch AWD version making more than 294 kW and possibly an extended range version that uses a 77 kWh battery pack for range. about 500 km.

A spokesperson for MG Motor Australia said: “The four-wheel drive version is certainly something we are considering, it is clearly a truly exciting and extraordinary proposition as we move into vehicle heritage. his sport.

“It would be nice to have it in our squad and definitely under consideration but not something we can confirm today.”

MG also told us that both the next-generation Marvel R electric crossover (right-hand drive) and the Cyberster electric roadster are also in the plans for Australia and are ‘not far away’.

The brand has become popular in Australia with a whole new generation of buyers who are largely unaware of its British sports car heritage and according to Mr Whaite it is in a strong position to capitalize on new technology. his best.

“I think we’re at a really exciting stage for the brand in terms of the fact that we’ve managed to become the seventh-biggest seller in the market and get there,” said Mr Whaite. in much faster time than MG’s Korean counterparts,” said Whaite.

“Moreover, cars like the MG 4 will change the way people think and feel about the brand. Obviously we have a very strong reputation for value and now it’s time to make sure we add even more facets to that.

“Obviously we’ve shifted our brand positioning to ‘Take Charge’, which is related to our electric future but also what we’re trying to do with the brand.

“While we will never give up value, it is no longer the foundation of our platform,” concludes Mr. Whaite.
