Mercedes-Benz recalls nearly one million vehicles due to brake failure | Business Newsletter

Mercedes-Benz is recalling nearly one million cars around the world due to an underlying problem that can, in rare cases, see the brake pedal disconnect from the brake system.

Over the weekend, the German auto giant said it would begin contacting affected customers whose vehicles were manufactured between 2004 and 2015.

ML and GL vehicles including SUVs and luxury minivans R-Class are being recalled, with a total of 993,407 affected vehicles, of which 70,000 are in Germany.

Mercedes did not say how many cars in the UK would be affected.

In 2021, the company recalled a similar number of vehicles due to problems with their emergency call system.

“Corrosion in the brake booster can, in the worst case scenario, lead to disruption of the connection between the brake pedal and the brake system,” said Germany’s KBA traffic regulator.

Mercedes adds that “it is possible that a particularly hard or hard braking action causes mechanical damage to the brake booster”.

The Stuttgart-based company said: “In such a very rare case, it would not be possible to decelerate the vehicle through the service brake. “Therefore, the risk of collision or injury is increased.”

Vehicles affected by the recall will be inspected and parts replaced if affected, Mercedes said.

“Until the inspection takes place, we ask customers not to drive their vehicle,” they added.

In recent years, this car company has been forced to recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

The German transport ministry said that in 2018, about 774,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles across Europe used software to beat diesel emissions tests, demanding a recall of them.

A year earlier, Mercedes had to recall 75,000 cars in the UK because of the risk of fire.

The problem involves a potentially faulty fuse in the starters causing the vehicle to overheat.

A fire hazard has prompted Mercedes owner Daimler to recall about a million vehicles worldwide.
