Mees and Lowe the winners at the 2023 Dallas Half-Mile

Dallas Half Mile

Defending AFT champion Jared Mees brought his FTR750 to victory at this weekend’s Dallas Half-Mile in Mesquite, Texas, with Trent Lowe topping the Singles.

The 1st place king won a quarter of the early bets to take the lead in the Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle Main Event, along with a trio of competitors hosted by Yamaha at JD Beach (No. 95 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT ), Dallas Daniels (No. 32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) and Dan Bromley (No. 62 Memphis Shades/Corbin/Vinson Construction Yamaha MT-07).

The opening stages of the competition proved to be a battle of high and low lines. The high shows itself as the initial quick order trail before giving way to a high risk, high reward tightening line at the bottom.

Just before half-way through, Mees and Daniels exploited that confusing low to break free and start a rematch of their Senoia penalty shootout. Meanwhile, Beach and Bromley fall into a five-wheeler battle for the final spot on the podium after being swept away by Brandon Robinson (No. 44 Mission Roof Systems Indian FTR750), Davis Fisher (No. 67 Rackley Racing / Bob Lanphere’s) into the fight BMC Racing Indian FTR750) and Briar Bauman (No. 3 Parts Plus/Jacob Companies KTM 890 Duke).

Daniels made several determined attempts to get past Mees but never came close enough to make a serious attempt to get through. A small swing from Daniels with less than a minute left gave the champ some breathing room. Then he was ceded even more when his young opponent stopped attacking for second place.

The win marks the 34th Half-Mile win of Mees’ historic career, leaving him just one point behind the all-time record held by Scott Parker.

Jared Mees

“Honestly, this is one of the hardest races to win. Going into Turn 1 and through Turn 2, you have to be delicate when going around corners. You have to hit the right brake line, position the accelerator properly, and if you do it wrong, it will lose all of your momentum. It’s definitely a tough race to win. Hats off to my entire team. We had a bit of a mess in Arizona, but we came back pretty strong throughout the day.”

Adding to Mees’ big evening was the misfortune of Beach, who was dropped from the podium contention and dropped from second to fourth on the championship standings in the process.

Robinson – who wasn’t even sure he could drive in Dallas after crashing in practice the previous two laps – won last place in the box. Bauman made it through the outer ring to climb to fourth place overall with Fisher trailing in fifth.

Bromley finished his impressive race in sixth place, while positions 7-10 were filled by Jarod Vanderkooi (No. 20 JMC Motorsports/Fairway Ford Indian FTR750), Bronson Bauman (No. 37 Fastrack Racing/2). Wheelz KTM 890 Duke), Ben Lowe (No. 25 Rackley Racing/Mission Foods Indian FTR750) and Kolby Carlile (No. 36 G&G Racing/Yamaha Racing Yamaha MT-07), in that order.

Daniels continues to hold on to the championship lead with 113 pocket points after a 1-1-2-2-2 start. Mees is currently second with 96 points, while two-time champion Bauman (78) also edged Beach (76) in third.

AFT Singles Unlimited by KICKER

Trent Lowe (48th American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R) can finally call himself the AFT Singles Unlimited Parts presented by the winner of the KICKER Main Event after repeatedly knocking on the door of the landmark achievement that for many years.

Lowe’s first Progressive AFT win led a race that demonstrated a dramatic reversal of fortunes compared to the four races leading up to that race.

After a slower-than-expected start to the season, the Honda-backed US Turner Racing team entered the day with just one podium between the talented trio of Lowe, Morgen Mischler (Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R No. USA), and Chase Saathoff (No. 88 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R).

They tripled that number in a single outing in Dallas after hitting back furiously at Devil’s Bowl Highway. The three immediately jumped ahead and turned the first half of the race into a glorious poster shoot for the team, running side-by-side while the court struggled to stay in their positions.

Lowe was eventually eliminated while the team closed in on Saathoff in second and Mischler in third, but they eventually held their ground to secure the podium lock.

Trent Lowe

“I’m happy and I think the whole team is happy too – there’s going to be a party at our pits tonight. The entire Turner Racing team got together to get it done. We struggled at the start of the season, but we’ve definitely improved on this with all three of us on the podium. I cannot thank the team enough.”

Meanwhile, the familiar suspects of the championship struggled a lot before finally getting good. Defending champion Kody Kopp (No. 1 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-F) ranked 8th, while Dalton Gauthier (No. 79 D&D Racing/Certified KTM 450 SX-F) and Max Whale (No. 18 Red Bull) KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-F) is buried outside the top 10.

Kopp and Whale finally found their groove, weaving across the pitch with Kopp taking fourth place at the checkers, just 0.172 seconds from the podium. Aussie Whale went home right behind her teammate, edging past Trevor Brunner (No. 21 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) to finish in the top 5.

Meanwhile, Gauthier made it his own to finish in seventh place, while Chad Cose (No. 49 First Impressive Racing Team / Husqvarna Racing FC450), Shayna Texter-Bauman (No. 52 Spare Parts) / Company Jacob KTM 450 SX-F) and Tom Drane, teammate of Brunner’s Estenson Racing Yamaha (No. 59 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) made the top 10.

As a result, Kopp continued to lead in a tight title fight against Gauthier (102-98) with Whale in third (86) and Brunner in fourth (78). It’s no surprise that Turner Racing’s entrants have made a huge leap in the standings, as they’re currently in fifth (Saathoff – 76), sixth (Lowe – 57) and seventh ( Mischler – 56) and is still very much on the hunt.

Next up, the 2023 Progressive American Flat Track season will tackle the fourth and final Short Track of the year with its first trip to Ventura Speedway in Ventura, California, for the Ventura Short Track opening in Saturday, May 6.
