Medtronic, Zydus hospitals support remote stroke care with AI

Zydus hospitals in Ahmedabad and Medtronic India have teamed up to launch a network of AI-powered hubs and spokes to assist stroke patients in the western coastal state of Gujarat.

An initiative of pharmaceutical giant Zydus, the general hospital chain has locations across Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. Its Ahmedabad branch operates two hospitals – a superspecialty center and a main hospital – with more than 660 beds.

HOW IT WORKS

According to the press release, Zydus and Medtronic will leverage locally developed AI technologies to provide timely diagnosis and treatment for stroke patients living in rural communities. With AI capabilities, a team of stroke specialists at Zydus will help analyze the results of CT scans performed at a partner or specialist hospital, assisting the doctors there in making decisions about treatment. treat.

The partners will also provide tools and technology to help doctors improve stroke treatment at select hospitals in remote areas.

WHY IT IMPORTANT

Every year, about two million people in India have a stroke. “During a stroke, the most important treatment is to remove the blockage in the brain as soon as possible – and [it] must be taken within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. Dr Ajit Sowani, senior neuroscientist at Zydus, explains that turnaround times are critical in such a situation, and the AI-driven technology helps clinicians to quickly track treatment steps next to address critical patient diagnoses.

Zydus notes that patients living in large cities have a better chance of receiving stroke treatment than those living in rural areas where resources and capabilities are lacking. According to Dr Arvind Sharma, senior stroke neurologist at Zydus, the launch of peripheral stroke centers will “close the care gap”, but also “enhance patient survival”. “, Dr. VN Shah, a senior expert said. Endocrinologist Zydus.

Dr Kalpesh Shah, a neurosurgeon and senior consultant at Zydus adds: “Timely diagnosis of disorders using AI even when you are miles away from a specialist hospital can be dangerous. may be lifesaving, allowing immediate initiation of guided therapy under expert supervision”.

TREND TO BIGGER WOMAN

Medtronic India has partnered with hospitals to transform stroke care by establishing a hub and spokes network model. In October last year, it started collaborating with Aster MIMS Hospital to establish a similar AI-powered stroke care network around Calicut.

“We have continuously partnered with hospitals across India to advance our vision of transforming stroke care for patients in India. Through these partnerships, we have can come together to integrate technology to address local healthcare barriers across the continuum of care,” said Medtronic India Vice President Michael Blackwell.

Meanwhile, Nanavati Max Private Hospital has also launched its own hub and spokes stroke care network in Mumbai in 2021, powered by RapidAI software.
