Mayor Adams unveils dyslexia program in NYC schools
Principal David C. Banks of the schools said the department will review the schools to learn from the experience as it expands the dyslexia program to other counties.
“They will be our innovation labs,” said Mr. Banks.
The all-day shows won’t be the first in the city. The Bridge preparatory charter school, opening in Staten Island in 2019, was the first and only public school in the state established to help children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities. City officials worked closely with school officials to learn more about the program.
Principals and other education officials have also spent time researching the methods used at Windward School, a private school with campuses in both New York City and the White Plains that primarily serves children with dyslexia. Ms. Quintana said teachers from Windward School will train teachers from other schools in helping children with dyslexia.
Under the new plan, school officials will require principals, who can choose their curriculum, to switch to a reading program based on the science of reading. Many people are now using a tool developed by Lucy Calkins, a scholar at the Teachers College, Columbia University, who has repeatedly come under the fire.
Ms Quintana said: “Officials will be encouraging principals to choose from a number of phonics-based curriculums to include as part of their comprehensive reading programmes, such as the Endowment Fund, True Reading good and Preventing failure in learning.
Mr. Adams and Mr. Banks – both blacks who attended the city’s public schools – have said that addressing the city’s reading crisis, in particular, has eliminated racial disparities in literacy outcomes. letters, are top priorities. The mayor often talks about reading about the path from school to prison, note that about 30 to 40 percent of prisoners have dyslexia.
Government officials are also looking for ways to help children with dyslexia.
Representative Robert C. Carroll, who represents Brooklyn’s 44th District, co-write an invoice that would direct the state to form a panel of experts to develop guidelines for universal screening, evidence-based curriculum interventions, and teacher training programs.
