Maxwell lowers Hidden Valley’s benchmark on the way to the pole
ASBK 2022 – Round 4
Hidden Valley – Eligibility
For the fourth round of the 2022 Australian Motorcycling Championship in Darwin, we may have a slightly different qualifying schedule. The all-competitor 20-minute time in Q1 was almost immediately followed by a 15-minute Q2 session for the 12 fastest drivers from Q1. And today tire maintenance will also be a big deal for riders and their teams, who need to go fast, but they also need to do as few laps as possible on their rubber because they save wear and tear when allocating tires to three 16. – layoffs races this weekend.
Wayne Maxwell and Bryan Staring both dropped for 65 seconds in their third lap, 65,654 for the defending champion and 65,882 for Staring. Then, Maxwell was faster again with 65,491, but was immediately stared at by Staring, who placed 65,448 on the fifth round of the session.
Lachlan Epis then joined the Ducati duo in the 65s, the 65,997. That time is coming despite having to switch to a different firmware in the BMW ECU. In a bizarre twist overnight, it appears Motorcycling Australia has now shown the software the team was fined for use at QLD Raceway (PRO), which is currently the only option allowed for its competitors. BMW. As a result, the BMW Alliance Team had to build a new map overnight for today’s use, as the maps for the PRO firmware are not interchangeable with the Suposystem (STK) firmware.
Cru Halliday, Arthur Sissis and Mike Jones all then entered their 65s to become the six drivers in that group. Most will now pay even though the session is only halfway through at the moment. They only need one lap to get them into that top 12 so they can then sit back and wait for Q2 while saving rubber.
Wayne Maxwell didn’t read that script…. The Ducati Boost Mobile man resumed the competition and dropped to 65,246 with seven minutes remaining in the session.

Hidden Valley Qualifying Two
Mike Jones was the earliest finisher in the final elimination session, with 65,411 on the second lap and Cru Halliday then went YRT 1-2. Wayne Maxwell then leapt to both with the 65,402 but the handle was hard to find, lots of patchy layers of Pirelli licorice painted on the runways of Hidden Valley.
Bryan Staring is fourth at this initial time with 65,848. Josh Waters turned 65 for the first time this weekend with a 65,943 and was later joined by his teammate Maxima Oils BMW Glenn Allerton on 65,874.
Staring improved to 65,521 to split the YRT men in half at the midpoint of the 15-minute session. Daniel Falzon then took a leap to sixth place with 65,792.
With a six-minute reminder, we have eight riders in 65 years as well as Mike Jones coming in first with 65,330 to take the lead and Staring improving to 65,374 to stay ahead of Maxwell P2. After that, the three of them quickly passed the opening area of the next round….
Jones down to 65,213, String 65,330 but Maxwell then lowered the qualifying record to 65,065. Four minutes to run and we now have ten riders aged 65 after Mark Chiodo and Troy Herfoss joined the club.
Maxwell then skipped the first 64 second lap in Hidden Valley to emphasize his speed, 64,962 in the seventh lap with three minutes remaining in the session.
At this stage, Lachlan Epis hasn’t been able to hit an impressive time in its Q1 run, 66,182 just good enough for 11th just ahead of Anthony West. Epis then dropped again to 65 minutes, 65,940, but that still didn’t improve his net position from 11th as Chiodo in the tenth made 65,863.
Troy Herfoss then took the lead in the penultimate lap of the session, 65,553, a huge leap more than half a second from yesterday for senior Penrite Honda. That will be a great motivation for him to be confident before the races.
Lachlan Epis improved her standing in the final round to push Chiodo out of the top 10.
Defending champ Wayne Maxwell will start his 16 lap race this afternoon from pole position with defending champ Mike Jones alongside him.
Bryan Staring rounded to the front row ahead of Josh Waters, Cru Halliday and Troy Herfoss. Josh Waters progressed towards the end of the session and was just two milliseconds behind the front row.
Arthur Sissis tops row three ahead of Glenn Allerton and Daniel Falzon while Lachlan Epis will start fourth.
It’s going to be a great contest this afternoon…
