Matt Corral Injury Update: Ole Miss QB exits Sugar Bowl with flipped ankle

Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral left the Sugar Bowl on Saturday with a right ankle injury. He won’t be back.

The injury occurred with 2:20 remaining in the first quarter. Corral was fired for the third time in the game, with Baylor’s high-profile defensive save sending Cole Maxwell rolling over his right ankle.

Ole Miss’s coach tended to Corral for a few moments on the pitch at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans before helping him off the field. Corral was unable to put any weight on his right foot as he made his way to the medical tent. He spent a short time on the sidelines before being helped in an injured stroller. Then he left the field and entered the changing room.

Corral returned to the field in the second half with crutches and shoulder pads.

Corral, a junior, left the match after completing 2 of 6 passes from 10 yards and an interception. He is also credited with seven dashes in 17 metres. He was considered a consensus first-round draft pick, including by Sporting News’ Vinnie Iyer, who predicted him as the seventh overall pick for the Carolina Panthers in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Iyer of Corral wrote:

“Corral is an active runner and confident runner who also displays aggression with big arms. He has quickly honed his raw skills under Lane Kiffin.”

Corral finished the 2021 season completing 260 of 384 passes (67.7%) for 3,343 yards and 20 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also had 152 dashes for 614 yards and 11 hasty touchdowns. It is not clear if he purchased an injury insurance policy, although the players may buy insurance up to 10 million dollars, depending on the draft location.
