Nine people were killed in a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California late Saturday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

The incident happened around 10:22 p.m. local time (1:22 a.m. ET), the statement said. It does not say if others have been injured.

Sgt. Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the Associated Press that the shooter was a man.

It is not clear if the suspect is in custody.

The shooting happened after thousands of people gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year in a small city about 10 miles east of Los Angeles with about 60,000 people, most of them Asian.

According to the city’s website, the two-day event features “food stalls with a variety of delectable items, arcade games and plenty of live entertainment.”

Police and fire units can be seen flooding the area in video posted to social media. Others showed the victim being transported to an ambulance.
