Marquez tops Saturday morning FP3 session

MotoGP 2022 – Round 18 – Phillip Island
Saturday morning FP3

Jack Miller had a lot on the line this morning at Phillip Island after a tough Friday held the Aussie back, he’s done 13th unique opening day on the timesheet.

Johann Zarco topped both sessions above Friday, the best timing was 1m29,475 arriving late in FP2 to put him ahead of Marco Bezzecchi, the Ducati racer. Repsol Honda’s Pol Espargaro finished third on Friday before Fabio Quartararo.

The pace in the previous Moto3 session held on Saturday morning was much faster than what the Moto3 riders managed on Friday, which shows that we are prepared for a very fast MotoGP FP3 session…

The riders took their time this morning before build to try and bolster their auto promotion to Q2.

Miguel Oliveira was the first of the big improvisers this morning, jumping from the 11th place he finished yesterdayup to Thursday on combined time.

Jack Miller made ten laps early before returning to the pit-lane and back out at the midpoint of the session with a soft front and medium rear.

Fabio Quartararo came off the field on a soft-soft mix at this half point of the session and hit fast, but failed to improve on his Friday marker at this stage of the proceedings.

It’s pretty cool and amazingly cool that the front tires actually depressurized on the road compared to what they were when the warmers were removed and the racers were off the piston track. The lack of emergency brakes on Phillip Island is doing their part towards that particularity. Michelin told us the tires will operate at 36 psi, and then drop to as low as 27 psi during the session as they cool.

With 15 minutes remaining, Oliveira progressed further in her first lap on a new soft rear, advancing to fourth in combined time. The Portuguese racer went faster again on the next lap, 1m29,510 taking him up to P2 in the combined time.

Jorge Martin then put in a blister, 1m28,616! Bezzecchi then go P2 on 1m29,138, Vinales to P3 on 1m29,196, Mir P4 on 1m29,259, Bagnaia P5 on 1m29,289 while Zarco has now dropped to sixth in total time.

Bezzechi then improved to 1m28,738 but remained in P2, while Marc Marquez then dropped to 1m28,993 to go P3.

Bagnaia then improved to 1m29,060, giving him P4.

At this stage of the proceedings, Miller has dropped in P22 but has just come out with a soft-soft…

Alex Marquez then dropped 1m28,964 to go P3, pushing his brother back to P4.

Fabio Quartararo was lightning fast but ran very fast in turn 4 and made a long penalty kick. In the next round, although the Frenchman improved to 1m29,039, good enough for P6.

Jack Miller was then injured… From P22 to P3 in a stinky slip, 1m28,822…

Five minutes left
Now the pressure is really on…

With less than five minutes to run racers outside the top 10 including sixth equestrian Johann Zarco along with Joan Mir and Aleix Espargaro…

Pecco Bagnaia then managed to part ways with the Marquez brothers for P5 after beating his first 1m28 of the weekend.

Marc Marquez then went to P2, pushing Jack Miller down to P4, although the Australian improved his marker to 1m28,721.

Aleix Espargaro also had a great last lap to reach P4 gp, and he gave Marquez a pull while doing it… Aleix Espargaro pushed Bezzecchi back to P5 and Miller to P6.

Fabio Quartararo was shuffled all the way back to P13, but saved the day in his final round with 1m28,858 putting him in tenth for automatic promotion to Q2.

Phillip Island Moto3 FP3 Report

One of the infamous Cape Barren geese raised a red flag in the dying seconds of the day’s opening session at Phillip Island this morning.

Ayumu Sasaki topped FP3 with a best time of 1m36.112. That ticks below the 1m36,302 lap record set by Jack Miller here on the track re-established in 2014. But just beyond the all-time lap record of 1m36,050 set by Alex Marquez for pole here in 2014.
