Man travels 1,500 miles to adopt a dog, but has no money to return home
The heart has no logic – and that’s the only thing that makes sense when we hear the amazing story of 23-year-old Joel Carpenter. When Portland resident Jeffrey Carpenter first noticed the beautiful Border Collie-Husky combination named Sadie on a website, he immediately fell in love!
Joel knew it was worth it to spend his last penny on a trip to see Sadie, so, without a second thought, he booked the flight!

Joel spent $300 on a one-way ticket, and now he’s broke. He couldn’t afford a round-trip ticket, so he just took Sadie from the shelter and started “walking” home with his new favorite companion in hand. With Sadie at his side, the devoted father has faith that everything will be fine during their 1,500-mile journey.

Joel spent the week walking and cheap transportation, but only accumulated about 700 miles; part of the problem was that he limited the number of hours he walked each day to relieve Sadie’s stress. With 800 more miles to go, Joel turned to online fundraising as a last resort and shared his story – including returning home – with the community.
