Magna begins production of Fisker Ocean EV in Austria

production of Fisker Ocean has started on schedule at contractor Magna Steyr’s Austrian plant, Fisker announced at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show. That paves the way for a planned U.S. launch as a 2023 model.

The electric SUV was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2020, before Fisker decided to build the foundation for the vehicle. After a failed attempt to use Volkswagen’s MEB platform, Fisker partnered with Magna on engineering and manufacturing at the company’s facility, which also builds Jaguar I-Pace.

Fisker then brought a prototype to the LA show in 2021 and promised that production would begin a year later on November 17, 2022—a goal Magna has now achieved.

Ocean will be offered in Sport, Ultra and Extreme versions. At LA’s 2021 event, Fisker said the base single-engine front-wheel-drive Sport will start at $37,499 and use CATL’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for an estimated 250-mile range. It also delivers 275 horsepower and a 0-60 mph time of 6.9 seconds.

Other models use a nickel cobalt manganese cell (NMC), also from CATL, and a two-motor four-wheel drive system. The Ultra is quoted at 340 miles, 540 hp and 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. The top Extreme Edition targets a range of 350 miles, 550 hp and 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds. This model, which starts at $68,999, also has most of the Ocean’s signature features, including a 17.1-inch rotating display, a solar roof, and California Mode, which removes all the clutter. windows while opening the roof for maximum ventilation.

The first 5,000 Ocean units will be a special Ocean One edition based on the Extreme trim level, but with unique styling features like 22-inch F3 SlipStream wheels and a Big Sur Blue paint job. All 5,000 units sold out in 30 days, with customers depositing $5,000 to secure one. Fisker claims a total of more than 63,000 bookings on Ocean.

In fact, the demand for the Ocean is so great that Fisker may have considered increasing production. In August, Fisker was reportedly looking to expand the number beyond the originally discussed maximum of 50,000 units, starting with Magna and potentially including a second production site—maybe in the US

This isn’t the first Fisker EV made in the US. The company tapped Foxconn to build a more affordable model called the Pear in Ohio starting in 2024. Fisker also recently revealed that it is looking to share the platforms of both Ocean and Pear with other automakers and selling regulated emission credits.
