In her one-on-one interview with Oprah Winfrey, Adele delved into what “Hold On” meant in the context of her divorce and where she lived while writing it.
“My friends will always say ‘hold on’ when I want to [how I felt] in the lyrics in the verse,” explains Adele. “But it’s exhausting to go on with it. It is a process. You know, the divorce process. Single parenting process. The process of not seeing my kids every day is really not the plan I had when I became a mother. The process of coming to yourself every day, being on your own every day, and still running a house, running a business. A lot of people know what I’m talking about and I feel the same way. I also juggled those. And it’s just, I don’t feel like doing that anymore.
“And also try to like, move on purposefully; not just to get out of it for no reason. My feet hurt walking through all that concrete.
“I never questioned whether I made a bad decision. I have never done that, for which I am very grateful. I never asked myself those questions. But it was like, maybe it would be better if I just shut up and move on. Just in terms of hurting the two people I love most in the world. ”
