Lucid teases faster three-engine Air EV

Launch of American electric vehicle (EV) Lucid Motors introduced a new variant of it Tesla Model WILL-rivalling Air The luxury sedan is expected to have three electric motors.

This new Lucid Air variant will be revealed at The Quail on August 19 as part of Monterey Car Week in California.

A high-performance, three-engine version of the Lucid Air has been in production for years, and once it’s out will bring to the fight the three-engine Tesla Model S Plaid.

Previous overseas reports has suggested that the Air’s three-motor powertrain will debut a new rear axle featuring dual electric motors producing up to 1000kW of combined power.

Combined with the existing front-mounted electric motor, the three-motor Air can generate up to 1200kW of power. That could see it pass the Tesla Model S Plaid on the drag strip.

Tesla claims a 0-100km/h sprint time of 2.1 seconds for the Plaid, though deployment time has been deducted.

Lucid has now uploaded a bunch of trailers for this upcoming Air variant with a not-so-subtle message around the number three.

The most recent teaser is a short video showing three cylindrical objects that appear to be part of an electric motor orbiting each other.

The video is captioned “Three is a magic number” and builds on earlier images showing employees at the Lucid’s Arizona plant holding up three fingers.

Currently, the Lucid Air lineup includes the rear-wheel drive Pure and the four-wheel-drive Touring dual-engine, Grand Touring and Grand Touring Performance.

The Grand Touring Performance has a total system output of 783kW, with a claimed 0-60mph (0-96km/h) time of 2.6 seconds and an electric range of 718km as tested by the EPA.

The Grand Touring generates 611kW and offers an EPA range of up to 830km depending on the wheel specified, while still achieving 0-60mph in 3.0 seconds.

The Touring has 462kW and the Pure 358kW, with both offering a claimed range of 653km.

Deliveries to Touring and Pure customers are expected to begin in the second half of the year, with Lucid launching the Air late last year with the Dream Edition.

This launch version offers power from 696kW to 828kW, depending on specifications.

Batteries range from 88kWh to 112kWh, and Grand Touring models support DC fast charging with capacities up to 300kW. All models have 900V electrical architecture.

Lucid recently announced that they are opening reservations for Air in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Great Britain.

The most compelling aspect of this announcement is Right handlebar production confirmedwith Autocar previously reported production could start this year, before deliveries to the UK in 2023.

At this stage, it’s unclear if this will lock in the Australian launch, but Mercedes-AMG EQS launched locally and BMW i7 is expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of this year.

Lucid has only sold the Air sedan for now, but has revealed a three-row electric SUV called the Gravitation.

A version of the SUV will be on display at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 21 before shipping to customers in 2024.

Lucid Gravity is said to offer a variant of the Air’s high-performance three-motor electric powertrain.
