Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said on Tuesday that police would investigate alleged parties held in Downing Street and Whitehall for apparent violations of Covid-19 rules.

The London police chief said that although the force does not normally investigate lock-breaking breaches long after the event, the decision to open an investigation was based on evidence provided by the Cabinet Office.

Dick acknowledged “deep public concern” over allegations that lockdown parties violated government Covid-19 guidelines.

“What I can tell you this morning is that due to the first information provided by the Cabinet Office investigative team and second the assessment by my officers, I can confirm that the Met is currently is investigating a number of events that have taken place at Downing Street and Whitehall over the past two years related to possible violations of Covid-19 regulations,” Dick said.

Several other events appear to have taken place at Downing Street, and Whitehall is not considered to have reached the threshold for a criminal investigation based on the information obtained, Dick said.

The investigation marks a turning point for the Met, which has previously faced fierce criticism for its rejection of calls to investigate alleged Downing Street parties.
