Variations of Loki could be Survivors above all others, but they are also frustratingly vulnerable to pitfalls. Case in point: Loki (Tom Hiddleston) has died multiple times in various stages of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, often due to two aspects of overestimating himself and underestimating his enemies. And in Loki season 1 finale, Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), constantly overzealous in his quest for vengeance, stabbed a dagger into the heart of the One who remained — and, by proxy, plunged the universe into madness.
As He Who Remains (a version of Kang the Conqueror, by Interesting Jonathan Majors) explains, the character is the arbiter of a sacred Timeline, a construct he created to protect the universe from multiple versions of himself (less “benevolent”). If the timeline were to be branched, a “Multiverse War” would bend the arc of reality into chaos. But to keep the Sacred Timeline relevant, He Who Remains had to “prun” and kill countless variations like Hiddleston’s Loki and Di Martino’s Sylvie—characters who have strayed from their intended paths and test the waters of free will. He considers these removals a necessary evil. Loki doesn’t necessarily agree, and Sylvie is too angry to sign up for anything other than her own revenge.
Then, He Who Remains introduces them, quite happily, with a choice: They can either become the arbiter of the Sacred Timeline themselves, or they can kill him, allowing the Multiverse War the starting pillar — just for a He Who Remains variant to emerge and create the Sacred Timeline Anyway — gives the full story arc. He also seems to be equally disturbed and relieved by the idea of putting this choice in his own hands. For a moment, he didn’t know what would happen next.
But Sylvie didn’t give herself and Loki much time to think. The two of them fight as she tries to reach the Remainer with her weapons, and Loki tries to convince her that – maybe, maybe, this time! – All is incorrect. She refused to listen, kissing him in submission before hurling him back through the TemPad gate into TVA headquarters. Finally alone with the dictator, she kills him; Loki, back at TVA, realizes almost immediately that the horror is over. A statue of He Who Remains replaced the Timekeeper-like statue on the wall. There will be part 2 of Loki?
Fortunately, yes. Disney+ is official renew Loki for the second season. The streaming service revealed interesting news during the finale’s closing credits, when a case file was marked with the stamp, “Loki will be back in season 2”.
Who will return?
Disney has yet to announce the cast that will return for a second season. But it’s safe to assume we’ll see heroes Loki and Sylvie again, as well as Owen Wilson’s Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Ravonna Renslayer, and Wunmi Mosaku’s Hunter B-15. Loki season 1 director Kate Herron will not be returning to lead season two, she has revealed. In one interview with ELLE, she said, “I’m really proud to have been a part of Loki’s story. I gave it everything in my heart and soul. I am excited to see what fresh eyes will bring.”
However, Herron did tease that fans can expect an even bigger storyline for Di Martino’s Sylvie in the next chapter: “We left her at the Citadel, and she looked shocked. and full of pain, and she’s in an earlier part of her more. In one November interview with Di Martino, the actress revealed to ELLE that she’s not even sure which version of Sylvie she’ll meet in season 2.
