Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, a Wyoming Republican harsh criticism former President Donald Trump’s impeachment that cost her her congressional seat, said she will vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in November.
“I don’t believe we can write in candidates, especially in swing states,” Cheney said Wednesday at an event at Duke University. “And because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, I am voting for Kamala Harris.”
Cheney’s comments were shared by a participant on social media, and retweeted by Harris spokesman Ian Sams, comes as the Harris campaign is taking steps to appeal to disaffected Republican voters. The campaign launched “Republicans for Harris” last month, and several Republicans were present at the Democratic National Convention.
Cheney, who was first elected to Congress in 2016, voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020But she became one of his most vocal opponents after the attack on the US Capitol on January 6.
She has One of 10 Republicans to vote to impeach Trump in 2021 and was one of two Republicans serving on the House committee investigating the January 6 attack. She called Trump’s actions that day “the greatest betrayal” of a US president.
Finally, her opposition to Trump cost her her leadership role in the GOP convention.. In 2022, she was ousted in her primary election. by a Trump-backed opponent.
Cheney is The latest high-ranking Republican to speak publicly She will vote for Harris. Last month’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago was attended by several Republicans, including Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, who served with Cheney on the January 6 committee, and Olivia Troye, a Trump administration official who cut ties with the former president over January 6.
