Lightroom-Killing Catalog System from Mylio: Access Your Photos Anywhere

Good organizational skills are vital in almost any business environment. This obviously applies to professional photographers, especially when it comes to photo management. Many photographers will use Lightroom’s built-in catalog system. However, a company called Mylio may have a much better solution for you.

Seattle-based company Mylio has worked hard to create a photo management system over the past decade. The brand new app offers some of the best features for amateurs and professional photographers who want to manage their photos. One of the main reasons for this is that Mylio Photos can work completely offline.

This means all your photos are available on almost any device. The only time connection is needed is when you sync photos between different devices. As long as the devices can see each other, they should be able to sync. This can even be done through a hotspot connection from a smartphone to a tablet.

User interface

A good user interface is very important for any software. One could argue that it is even more important to say that the software is helping you organize or manage something. This is why Mylio Photos is simply amazing. The user interface is very intuitive and without even looking at any tutorials, it is an extremely simple software to use.

You can comfortably ignore all the little tips that pop up when using the software and still not face any major navigation problems.

On the other hand, if you need a little help getting things going, the “Getting Started” section in the Dashboard tab is a great place to start. The dashboard is the last tab from the left and provides most of the features you will use in the software. For more help you can follow link here.

In my own usage, I found that I spent most of my time scrolling back and forth between the “Folder” tab and the “Dashboard” tab. Between these two, I have all the control and options I need to manage all my images and devices.

Speaking of devices, the software allows you to add as many devices as you want. This offers an amazing level of flexibility. No restriction is a breath of fresh air.

Other tabs in the software are Folders, People, Maps, Calendar, and All Photos. Much of it is self-explanatory. The Folders tab allows you to see all the folders you have added to the software. These include any linked as well as imported directories. The Calendar tab helps you view images based on the date they were taken. You can also sync your Google or Apple calendar to help you manage any upcoming projects or shoots. This is also a great way to quickly find pictures you took on a particular day.

Finally, the Maps section gives you GPS location information on images with that information. For any image taken on a camera without GPS, you can simply add that info yourself. The People section helps you tag and organize your images based on the people in your photos. Features People are quite extensive and extremely intelligent. You can add people to the software and Mylio will automatically start recognizing them in any images you add in the future. And for those of you worried about privacy, Mylio Photos doesn’t share any of this data with the cloud, the Mylio company, or any other company. All facial analysis is performed on the device itself.

When it comes to the user interface, Mylio has done a great job at keeping things simple and easy to navigate.

Access on multiple devices

This is one of Mylio’s best features: the ability to access all your pictures from any device you’ve added to your profile. The software is fully compatible with macOS, Windows, iOS and Android.

First, I downloaded the software to my Windows PC and selected the folders that I wanted to add. I like the fact that the software doesn’t try to squeeze all your images into it. You have full control over adding images.

I decided to create a new folder for Mylio that I could fill with the images I wanted in the software. I decided not to add any pictures from my iPhone; however, i connected my android phone and added all the images from there.

I’m currently reviewing an Android device and the images from that phone are instantly available on all my other devices making things super easy. Any photos I take are quickly organized based on my preferences and how I organize folders. I can have the images that I am using as part of the evaluation land in a specific folder. When I got home, the images I took during the day were already on my desktop, ready for me to work on.

It’s not cloud storage

If we’re being completely honest, the ability to access all your images on multiple devices is nothing new. However, there is one fundamental difference with Mylio, which is that this software is not cloud storage. All devices are securely connected to the peer-to-peer network.

Once the images are synced with the app, you can access the images even if you don’t have an internet connection. In fact, I tested the software to see if I still had access to all my pictures when using my phone in airplane mode. All images are still available and they are full resolution files, not just thumbnails.

Of course, if you have complete control over how much space you want to leave your files on your device. If you are managing large amounts of data, it may be an idea to have the majority of files as smart preview and current or active files at a higher resolution.

This is one of the biggest advantages that Mylio has over many competitors. You don’t need to buffer files or wait for a good connection before you can access anything. This alone makes Mylio extremely powerful and well-suited for professional use.

Perfect for professionals

As discussed above, Mylio is not a cloud-based storage system. This alleviates many of the problems professional photographers face when trying to work on the go. There are many cases where a fast, stable internet connection is not available. If you manage many of your images using online services, those images will not be available to you.

It is for this reason that Mylio offers a great opportunity not only to manage your files, but to use a better workflow. If you’re working remotely, you can sync your files across multiple devices through the Mylio Photos app.

Personally, I find that it’s easy to sync files to the iPad and then organize all the pictures. I can quickly go through the selection process, removing any images that I know I won’t use, such as images where the subject may have flickered or the lighting is incorrect. Once the selection process is complete, I rate all images up to five stars, then further narrow down the files I will be working on.

I prefer doing this on the iPad because the screen is bigger and the interface is better. I appreciate that the camera also allows you to give a star rating. However, in my experience, most cameras have a confusing interface for these features.

Once all the images were organized, I had them available on practically every device I was working on. This means that when I return home, these images will be available on my main computer, organized and ready to edit. If I’m feeling too rushed, I can even do a few light edits on the raw files so I can start making more detailed edits when I get home. In addition, all metadata such as star ratings, labels, keywords, person tags and GPS tags are also added.

Again, images are still available offline, so if I’m working on the train, for example, I don’t need to worry about losing my connection midway.

Finally, one of the most useful and potentially underrated features of Mylio Photos is the way it backs up all your pictures. Backing up your files is important if you’re a pro, and Mylio Photos automatically backs up all your images to the vault.

After setting up a backup system, you can automatically back up multiple copies of your images. And again, this is not a cloud service, which means it’s always available across all of your connected devices.

Epilogue

A good workflow is extremely important, and anything that improves your workflow is probably a good idea to do. With many photo managers and cataloging systems, there are always some limitations that make them less than feasible in a professional environment. For example, Lightroom is great, unless you’re working away from home. Trying to manage photos on the go and access them across devices isn’t ideal.

Finally, Mylio has created something remarkable with its photo management software. Not only does it provide a better cataloging system, but it also offers one of the best workflows for professionals on the go.
