Lexus ROV concept is a luxury car powered by hydrogen



Next to each other in all shapes and sizes, but we’ve never seen one like Lexus ROV concept. For one, it’s a Lexus; The company is not a big player in the side-by-side segment. It’s as luxurious as the badge on its nose suggests, and it’s powered by hydrogen combustion engine.

Lexus explains that ROV (an acronym for Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle) is “a response to the luxury consumer’s growing passion for the outdoors and the adventurous spirit.” It also illustrates The brand’s desire is to design lifestyle-oriented products, and it introduces engineering department research into new technologies. The ROV spans 322 inches, 68 inches wide, and 71 inches wide. And, while it doesn’t carry the giant spindle grille, it still fits the Lexus design language thanks to the angular body panels.

Inside, ROV offers a pair of seats with seat belts and suspension components to filter out collisions, carbon fiber relatively simple accents and instrument cluster with analog tachometer and digital display. Lexus notes that the “Tazuna” approach to interior design has shaped most of the cars its recent concept cars overflowing with ROVs, which means human-centered cabins. Interestingly, it also turns out that the ROV meets the same standards of quietness, durability and reliability as the regular production cars it sells, which is no small feat.

Power comes from a 1.0-liter direct-injection engine that ignites compressed air hydrogen stored in a storage tank. Lexus doesn’t release technical details so we don’t know how much horsepower or torque the engine makes. Its cylinder count hasn’t even been announced, although zooming in on the exhaust confirms that it’s a three-cylinder. It may not be a coincidence that the parent company Toyota tested a hydrogen-powered Corolla race car powered by 1.0 liter hydro hydrogen burner earlier in 2021. However, that engine was turbocharged; this is not.

A look at the center console shows that the ROV is equipped with a two-speed shifter and differential lock, so it should be able to stay on track. Lexus also tells us its first side-by-side model offers users a generous amount of suspension.
