Many of us know Lenny Kravitz for his music but did you know he is also a successful photographer? I think you might be pleasantly surprised at the quality of his work.
Most rockstars find themselves in front of the camera rather than behind it. Lenny Kravitz was at the forefront of this trend when he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and photograph rather than pursue the trend. I know this thanks to the photographer and the educator Tatiana Hopper’s latest video where she explores the lives of musicians who decide to choose a camera.
The video begins with the man talking to himself about some of the reasons why he loves photography along with a glimpse of some of his work. I must say, I was blown away by the quality of the paintings he made. For me, the work is like a cross between street photographers Joel Meyerowitz mixed with photojournalists of Walker Evens. That’s really good and I’m not just saying that because he’s a celebrity. The video goes on to tell us some behind the scenes stories of Kravitz, where we learn that he was given his first camera from his photojournalist father at the age of 21. We also get to see some photos that he has done recently. One of the series that I especially enjoy watching is called Flash. A collection of photos taken from someone’s point of view with dozens of people taking them at once. Some of these photos look like they’re on the red carpet while others look like a bunch of paparazzi in different settings.
It was indeed a pleasant surprise to learn that Lenny Kravitz is a photographer. The cool part about all of this is that he can actually shoot. His eye for detail and composition got him up there with some amazing pieces. I know personally I will be keeping an eye on what he does in terms of visuals in the future.
