Michael Conlan’s confidence grows as the match against Leigh Wood gets closer and closer. With the former Olympic best player claiming his first, even if minor, world championship, the 30-year-old from Ireland refused to let his golden opportunity go to waste.

As the opening bell rang throughout Nottingham Arena, Conlan tried to set up his shot. A calm, cool and collected Wood bobbed to the sides as pictures of Conlan bounced off his gloves innocuously. The WBA “Regular” featherweight then proceeded to use his own jab into his man’s face. After a successful find, Wood then combined with a combination, all of which connected the square on Conlan’s face.

Wood continued to dominate the final moments of the round until he took his eyes off the prize for a moment. Those precious seconds were all Conlan needed as he took down Wood with a massive left hook. At Wood’s trust, he immediately jumped to his feet but he never proved right.

With a full minute to recover, Wood seemed unsure of himself for the second. He was reluctant and cautious to stay away from Conlan’s left arm the entire time. However, even with Wood fighting more defensively, Conlan boxed beautifully. He delivered eye-catching and remarkable hits while Wood continued his recovery.

It wasn’t until round 4 that Wood showed up looking like his usual self. He promptly pushed Conlan behind and turned the former Olympian into a brawler as opposed to a boxer. With Conlan fighting Wood, the second beater had his most productive round yet.

However, momentum continued for Wood until half a point into the sixth round, Conlan settled everything with a powerful jab and odd footwork. Wood can no longer control his man with his arms and elbows in the corner of the ring. Instead, Conlan makes him miss and, more importantly, pay, whenever he gets close.

In season eight, Conlan boxed the circles around Wood. At one point, he landed three consecutive stabs before finishing the combo with his right hand. As blood trickled down Conlan’s left eye, he redirected the attack to his man’s midsection.

Throughout much of their competition, Conlan worked his way up. But, as the championship rounds approached and Wood seemed severely frustrated with the scoreboard, he threw all his technique out the window and simply did it.

In the penultimate round, Wood’s fierceness pushed him closer to retaining his world title. With only seconds left in the half, Wood scored his first knockdown of the night. While he couldn’t keep up with the end of the round, Wood continued where he left off on the last frame.

Defensive Conlan stepped back cautiously as Wood crept forward. In a moment of confusion, Wood lowered his sharp right arm causing Conlan’s body to go limp. The former Olympian fell to the rope below, where Wood began to unload.

With a relentless barrage of punches, Wood refused to give up until Conlan was violently thrown from the ring, leading to an epic finish and coming from behind victorious.
