Learn How to Shoot and Edit These Portraits

The beauty of artificial light is that you can create amazingly creative and engaging photos that simply wouldn’t be possible with natural light. Using snoot and gobo is one such possibility and this great video tutorial will show you how a photographer lights up, captures and edits such images using them.

Coming to you from Nathan Elson, this great video tutorial will show you how he’s lighting, shooting and retouching portraits with pretty cool lighting. In this case, Elson is using a less frequently used modifier, an addon with a gobo insert. If you haven’t seen them before, a snoot is a narrow cylindrical or conical tube that allows the photographer to focus light into a narrow beam, essentially collimating it to an extent. Meanwhile, the gobo (short for “go-between”) is a small disc placed in front of the snoot that allows you to project different patterns for creative effect. Together, the combination allows for very precise and eye-catching lighting and shapes with sharp contours not possible with more standard modifiers, making them great for Explore your creativity. Check out the video above for the full info on Elson.
