France’s Emmanuel Macron used his victory speech on Sunday to address discontent over his leadership and the anger of those who chose his far-right rival Marine Le Pen.

“I am no longer a candidate for one camp but the president of all,” Macron said as he addressed his supporters against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Center Macron looks set to get around 58% in the second and final round of voting in the French Presidential election, according to a series of exit polls and projections, with nationalist leader Marine Le Pen over 42%. Estimates in France are often accurate but can be refined as official results become available.

Despite the predicted victory for Macron, 44, the ratio represents a smaller gap between the two candidates than in the 2017 election, when Macron won with 66.1% of the vote.

Macron said on Sunday that the concerns of those who abstained, voted for him only to block his far-right opponent, or simply chose Le Pen needed to be addressed.

He said his next five-year term will be different, promising that “no one will be left on the side of the road.”

“Because each of us doesn’t just care about ourselves… This is what makes the French people a unique force that I love so much and I’m so proud to have served once. more,” he said, according to Reuters. Translate.

Speaking to CNBC’s Karen Tso, the re-elected president said he was happy with the outcome, but “is committed to the benefit of France and Europe for now.”

Macron has been accused of lacking empathy for voters. University of Warwick professor of French politics Jim Shields told CNBC earlier this week that Macron has the difficult task of defending five years in office but also presenting a new vision for the future.

“What he has to do is show empathy, get off his horse, try to show that he cares about people’s day-to-day concerns, that he’s not the chairman of the rich but a lot of people. who accuses him,” he said.

The 2022 campaign is set against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the cost of living crisis in France, the rise in support for the far-left among the younger generations and the proposals of popular voter indifference.

Riot police allegedly attacked and sprayed tear gas at protesters in central Paris on Sunday night, who had protested Macron’s victory.
