KYIV, Ukraine – Russia unleashed a series of fierce missile strikes on the northeastern city of Kharkiv on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, destroying a dormitory for the deaf, crushing the buildings. residential homes and killed at least 15 civilians, Ukrainian officials said.

The death toll in the city during the six-month war has now surpassed 1,000, according to local officials.

The head of the Kharkiv regional military service, Oleh Syniehubov, said: “Last night turned out to be one of the most tragic for the Kharkiv Region in the entire war. Rescue teams are still racing between multiple blast sites, he said, adding that the number of casualties could rise.

The attacks began around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, when a Russian cruise missile crashed into a dormitory housing the elderly and those with hearing impairments, according to Ukrainian officials. At least 10 civilians were killed and 17 others were injured, including an 11-year-old child.

Ukrainian officials said that, because some of the people living in the building are deaf, they may not hear the groans when the missile warning is coming, or Firefighters’ screams calling for survivors.

Video of rescue efforts showed relatives of those inside a destroyed building screaming, crying and calling for loved ones. “My grandmother is there,” one man shouted. There has been no response.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it had struck a target in Kharkiv, home to foreign mercenaries, but offered no evidence to support this claim.

On Wednesday night, after the attack on the dormitory, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine denounced Russia for a “cowardly and mocking attack on civilians.” He said this is the latest evidence that Moscow, struggling on the battlefield, is targeting civilians to realize its ultimate goal of destroying the Ukrainian state.

Hours after Zelensky spoke, a rocket hit Kharkiv’s Krasnograd neighborhood and more than 10 buildings were damaged, officials said. At least two civilians were killed and two others were injured, including a 12-year-old child.

Around 4:30 a.m., eight other rockets were fired from the Russian city of Belgorod in the direction of Kharkiv, Ukrainian officials said, hitting buildings in at least two of the city’s districts. Two missiles hit a tram depot. Officials said at least three civilians were killed and 18 others were injured, including two children.

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, located 25 km from the Russian border, has bombarded by a near-constant barrage of artillery, rockets and rockets since Moscow launched the invasion in February. Early in the war, Russian forces tried to besiege and capture the city without success, and were eventually pushed back across the border by Ukrainian forces.

However, Ukrainian and Western military analysts say that the Kremlin has never given up on its goal of capturing the city. Lacking ground forces to mount a continuous assault, it sought to bring the city into submission.

Earlier, on Wednesday, mayor Ihor Terekhov said that the city’s ability to function despite Russian attacks is one reason Moscow continues to try to bring citizens to their knees.

“The Russian army targeted Kharkiv with such hatred, with such aggression. Such cynical destruction of the city happened because Kharkiv did not give up,” he said. “Our duty is to endure.”
