Last Samurai recovers to get Razorback

Never underestimate coach D. Wayne Lukas.

That lesson was learned again on February 18 at Oaklawn Parkwhere the Hall of Fame coach won his 630th North American classified bet with The Last Samurai Warrior in the $600,000 Razorback Handicap (G3).

Owned by Willis Horton Racing, Malibu Moon’s 5-year-old son was largely ignored by a score of 8-1 in favor of an intriguing trio consisting of 8-5 and 1st, 2nd place winners Western Willpower , law professor (5-2), and mallow tree (7-2).

In the beginning, the cheap runners lived up to expectations. West Will Power hooked up with the Law Professor as the field played in the first leg with Ginobili managing a spot to watch the middle team after being disturbed at halftime. Meanwhile, the Last Samurai and jockey Cristian Torres spent their time near the rear in three-quarters of the 1/16-mile race.

West Will Power and Law Professor continued to run 1-2 respectively through moderate scores of :23.74, :47.33 and 1:11.25 until the beginning of the stretch, where Last Samurai was guided with many space to run towards the middle of the stretch. track and launch an attack at 1:36.13 that Lukas says he knows chestnuts are capable of providing. The final Samurai quickly dispatched the Law Professor and then West Will Power to win by 1.5 minutes. The last time was 1:42.19.

The Law Professor on Tuesday and Ginobili weakened towards the end.

“We had a long trip to Florida for Pegasus,” Lukas said of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) on January 28 at Gulfstream Park, where the last Samurai finished fourth after seven races. “When we got back to Oaklawn he was training really well, I think we have a chance to do this.”

Lukas also credits Torres for giving Last Samurai exactly the ride he needed.

“Cristian did what we thought he needed to do. Stay away and let him run,” he said.

Last Samurai will be next for the Essex Handicap (G3) on March 18, the next leg in the handicap division at Oaklawn, also running at 1 1/16 mile.

“We’ll meet him in Essex and until the end. We won’t hide from any of these,” Lukas said.

Lukas has only won the Razorback once in his 46-year coaching career with Purebred. The last time he entered this race was in 1985 with Imp Society, who won seven graded bets that year including the Oaklawn Handicap (G2).
