Keeneland Postpones Shipping, May Delay January Sale
With Lexington and surrounding areas rapidly experiencing a winter storm that resulted in hazardous road conditions on January 6, Keeneland postponed the shipbuilding date for horses classified for Sale. All ages in January of Keeneland — and officials are monitoring the situation to determine if the sale itself needs to be delayed.
“With winter storms and poor road conditions in Central Kentucky, along with truckloads and cancellations, horse deliveries for the January 2022 Sale will be delayed until Saturday. , January 8,” announced the auction arm of Lexington racetrack late Thursday. “We will continue to monitor weather and travel conditions to determine if the January Sale start date needs to be pushed back by one day.”
Scheduled January 10-13, the January Sale features 1,516 horses – stallions and prospective broods, short-term and race-age horses, plus stallions and promising stallions – classified as four sessions. That original catalog number does not include additions.
Temperatures in Central Kentucky are forecast to drop to a low of 9 degrees Thursday night, with a low of 10 degrees and a high of 21 degrees on Friday. While temperatures improved markedly on Saturday, with a high of 43 degrees and a low of 39 degrees, significant rainfall is expected Saturday night.
