Boxing internals claims it to be the Fight of the Year 2022. Indeed, last year’s clash between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden was a horror movie worthy of the term “classic”. And now, at last, the two women are about to throw down again – this time in Ireland, Taylor’s hometown. Eddie Hearn made sure the rematch was announced at New York’s Hulu Theater shortly after Serrano won after a grueling showdown with Erika Cruz on Saturday night, with Taylor in the ring alongside the exhausted Serrano. . This is one of the biggest fights of the year for me so far, as the first one between Taylor and Serrano was so close.
Although Taylor ultimately won through the referee’s card, the fight could really go either way. After all, it’s a back and forth relationship, with the two boxers sometimes trading ruthlessly. Definitely a horror movie, it requires a rematch. And now it has one, although most would probably want to see both rematch sooner than May. However, boxing is a complicated sport behind the scenes. At the very least, it’s nice to see a real big fight announced and official.
One has to wonder how many fights Serrano will go on after Saturday. The first game against Taylor was devastating – and this past Saturday’s match against a great Cruz was even more so. There were times this weekend when Serrano and Cruz were simply throwing powerful punches at each other for as long as possible and as fast as they could. It’s Hagler-Hearns level stuff. The fact that Cruz, a bloody mess, collapsed in her corner after the final bell proved how intense the 10th round was.
And Serrano himself took a lot of hits to the head. A woman’s ingenuity, determination, endurance and tenacity are extraordinary. She simply won’t fall, no matter how stressful the matter is in the ring. It was that kind of discipline that helped her win last weekend, and that almost helped her win over Taylor last year. Though Taylor proved herself to be tough in her first fight with Serrano. Fighting against her country this May, the undefeated will surely give up an inch without trying to take two.
