All strategic situations involve a clear goal of “winning”. In most of these fights, the idea is to outmaneuver or overpower the opponent. In Kaiju War, that’s not an option. Your opponent is a monstrous creature. It is huge. It is powerful. It can evolve and develop new abilities in battle. You’re not exactly a “winner”. You are surviving. Meaning that success involves very different approaches.
You are the new mayor of a city. You should deal with common, typical problems. However, the unthinkable happened while visiting a local military base. A kaiju appeared. It quickly destroys a nearby building and begins walking towards the player. You cannot prevent it. You can only repel. And so, it becomes about going from area to area, repelling kaiju until scientific discoveries can catch up to offer a more definitive precaution, as you gradually Find out what’s going on.
Kaiju War is a tactical title. You have a small grid map in front of you. At the start of both your force and the kaiju’s turn, you begin by drawing cards that offer potential benefits. Maybe you will get a free army base or science points. Perhaps the monster of the day will recover eight health points. When the kaiju’s turn begins it also means your security will drop by one level, that’s how long the countdown is before it determines Dr. Wagner, the scientist working on the real measure. to “beat” it.
The problem is that you can’t use typical tactics. The kaiju are stronger than your units. The force you send out won’t do great damage or force it back. They’re delaying tactics while you wait for the lab guys to figure out a real defense. As time goes on, the creature will wreak havoc on the area. Thus, reduces your income and the basis for deploying units. That means when your units are destroyed, you cannot rebuild them. Not to mention, once you locate Dr. Wagner, you need to evacuate and go to another lab. When the scientist is on the go, you don’t earn income or science, which means more time for the monster to recover and the successful goal to be pushed back.
This means Kaiju War go to desperate measures. Rather than thinking about the firepower of a unit, their side effects and range can be more beneficial. A tank will take longer to get somewhere. However, when the kaiju are moving, a tank in their way can slow their progress. Artillery cannot move and attack at the same time. However, if you know the kaiju is about to head straight for Dr. Wagner’s last known location, you can locate it and expect to take multiple hits as it passes. Especially since there will be a percentage indicating how likely the kaiju will go through certain tiles. (In general, you’ll know exactly where it will end up on their path of destruction when it’s their turn, so you can place a unit there accordingly.) Dr. Wagner bugs and runs to the place. safe, ideally with some extra truck or train going there to get to the new lab.
It’s a fascinating approach. Especially since there are measures in place to make things “fair”, while maintaining that the kaiju is large and unstoppable. While the monster “cards” can be strong or heal a lot of the damage you’ve worked so hard to deal with, your multiple cards give you the edge. For example, getting a Military Surge when most of your civilian buildings are destroyed is a godsend. That means you can deploy and repair units for free. You can get a unit test. Meaning that although the kaiju will still be stronger, you can get a Shark Jet that can keep moving after attacking.
So all your attacks are really buying time. Instead of a health bar, enemies basically have a bar based on exhaustion. When you put it down, it won’t be able to move far. This means that you can send other units to stop fires, rebuild your army, prepare for their possible spikes, and even be ready in case you hit an enemy. chase one away and it comes back. Also, you want to try and complete challenges to earn Medals. Because those not only show you have completed a mission in a level but also allow you to strengthen the stats of your Ace units.
I appreciate what Kaiju War ask the player to do. You are in a doomed situation. Make the best of it. As long as you keep the scientists alive and not completely wiped out, you’ve done well.
Kaiju War will come PC on April 28, 2022. It will eventually come to Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X as well.
