Kaffeemaschine’s Guzzi Travel Agency Brings “Gentlemen” to GT

Axel Budde believes that motorcycling should be done in style. He’s the founder of specialty shop Moto Guzzi, Kaffeemaschinewho just built the third movement in the limited series Grand Tourers based on the Guzzi 850. And like everything else they’ve produced, it’s incredibly elegant.

Kaffeemaschine’s GT line was conceived last year, when a customer requested a bike that prioritized comfort for longer rides. It got Axel to think about how he rarely sees vintage bikes off the road – and how the touring scene is saturated with overloaded modern adventure bikes. So he put his imagination to work and created the first two GT prototypes.

The latest build follows the same pattern, albeit with subtle improvements. It is based on the 1982 Moto Guzzi 850T4, but most of the original movement has been upgraded with Kaffeemaschine parts.

Work begins with Guzzi’s engine. The crew overhauled it with a balance crank, a lightweight flywheel, electronic ignition and a modern alternator that should work just fine with the new Lithium-ion battery. There’s also a set of Dell’Orto PHF carbs and a pair of stainless steel Kaffeemaschine exhaust pipes.

The factory’s previous GT machines in Germany had been equipped with 1,000 cc engines, but Axel didn’t see the need here. Engine improvements have boosted the V-twin’s torque output to 76 hp – and the diet has reduced its weight by 184 kg [406 lbs]. What a boon for lazy weekend getaways.

Much of the weight is saved on the bodywork, which is all new and made from carbon fiber. Kaffeemaschine used the same mold they designed with the first two GT prototypes and plans to build more in the future.

Aesthetically skillful and refined, like all Kaffeemaschine customs. The tank is of their own design, but it is loosely modeled on the Laverda SF.

Above is an elegant luggage rack, designed to carry luggage through a specially designed quick release system. Both the seat and the tank bag are upholstered in matching aniline leather and there’s a transparent pocket at the top of the bag to hold a map or a mobile phone running a navigation app. In addition, there is a USB charging port nearby; it is hidden in the nut of the main steering body.

We took extra care to ensure that this gentleman’s touring car is as beautiful as it looks. A new Ikon shock is back in action, while the fork has been refurbished with upgraded FAC internals.

The 1980s tourers now ride on 18” wheels, which have San Remo rims, stainless steel spokes and Heidenau K34 tyres; Classic shoes using modern compounds. The classic Brembo brakes have been restored and upgraded with Le Mans discs, stainless steel threads and a modern Brembo master cylinder. And Kaffeemaschine installed their proprietary rear brake torque assist.

There’s some sophisticated wizardry going on in the cockpit as well. The custom riser clamp doubles as a speedo holder, holding a Kaffeemaschine branded speedo. The low handlebars feature new handles, LED turn signals at the end of the bar and single mirror, and an electric lock is provided for the keyless RFID system.

The polished switch assembly on the left side is Kaffeemaschine’s own design and is one of the classiest switches we’ve seen. The traditional circular front and rear lights, and new rear latches, complete the specifications of the parts.

Of course, the finishing touches of this 850 also count as its upgrades. Axel and his team showed utmost restraint, with simple paint colors and an elegant balance of black and glossy parts.

Now that this ‘GT850’ is all buttoned up, it’s for sale — along with its own kit, bike cover, owner’s manual and TÜV certificate. In the meantime, Axel is working on ideas for the next GT model, such as a new front fork setup. And that means he’s going to have a long way to go to get through its paces.

“Again, I would wonder, what do all the other riders have inside their giant panniers,” he said wittily.
