Judo at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games: Schedule, Indians compete, format, time, venue
Judo will make its fourth and first appearance as a core sport of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The sport of Japanese origin was first played at the 1990 CWG and was also introduced in 2002 and 2014 as an optional sport.
Judo’s Rules and Scoring System
There are two ways to gain points in Judo restricting judokas to punching, kicking or attacking opponents. The main objective of the sport in the competitive arena is to throw opponents and lock them with a peg, or immobilize them with a joint lock or a chokehold.
A judoka gains Ippon (full score) by throwing an opponent straight in the back with ‘control and power’. It can also be obtained with a 20-second latch or by using a clamp or hand lock. Similarly, if the intensity of control and power are minimal, the dominant judoka will receive Waza-ari (half a point).
Judo schedule and venue for the 2022 Commonwealth Games
Judo will be played in seven separate categories for men and women. All judo competitions will be held from August 1 to 3 at Coventry Arena.
