“September 17, we are back,” said WBC super flyweight athlete Jesse Rodriguez. “It is an honor to be a part of this card and I want to thank Matchroom and Teiken for giving me this opportunity.” The card Rodriguez refers to is the high-end Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin deck that will be knocked out on September 17 in Vegas. Rodriguez will defend his title that night in a co-main match against Israel Gonzalez in the scheduled 12th round. “Having the opportunity to fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend, as co-lead of Canelo-GGG is really special,” he added, “and I plan to put on another spectacular performance. and continue to build on his legacy.”
Rodriguez recently made a splash for himself when he overcame the excellent Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in eight rounds. He will now return to the ring just a few months later to appear on what could be the biggest fighting card of the year. “Each battle is more important now than the last,” said Rodriguez. “It’s not just about winning; that’s how you win. That’s my job and my coach Robert Garcia now; to look sensational every time we step into the ring and continue to show the world that I am one of the strongest boxers on the planet. ”
Advertiser Eddie Hearn certainly wanted to give Rodriguez the kind of exposure that the Canelo-Golovkin 3 card can provide. Hearn said: “Jesse was the hottest asset in the sport right after his electric performances in the first half of 2022, and he is looking to build that on the biggest possible foundation… Israel will certainly give it all he has over Mexican Independence Day weekend, but I believe you’ll get to see another special performance from a seriously talented young boxer in Jesse. “
Of course, no one could be happier when the Rodriguez-Gonzalez fight was done than Gonzalez himself. Facing Rodriguez in such a dazzling spotlight was a lifetime opportunity for the little-known boxer. “I want to thank Matchroom but most of all I want to thank champion Jesse Rodriguez for the opportunity,” he said graciously. “I know I’m going to make the most of this and make my dream of becoming world champion on September 17th.”
The Canelo Alavarez-Gennady Golovkin 3 card will be streamed live on the DAZN streaming service.
