Japanese figure skater Hanyu retires from competition

Two-time Japanese Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu announced his retirement from competition at the age of 27 on Tuesday.

“I will no longer be compared to other skaters as a competitor,” the “Ice Prince” said at a crowded press conference in Tokyo, saying he would focus on skating. tapes in exhibitions for his beloved fan base.

Multiple media reports on Monday said the figure skater is likely to announce his retirement from the sport. The decision came after Hanyu struggled with injury at this year’s Beijing Games.

Hanyu, who has enjoyed an illustrious career, became the first Japanese male skater to win an Olympic gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The 2010 world champion, Hanyu was also the first figure skater to score over 100 in the short program.
