Japan Embraces Nuclear Power, Cancels Phased Elimination Plans – Is It Rising With That?

Essays by Eric Worrall

Nuclear power plays “an important role as a carbon-free primary load energy source in achieving supply stability and carbon neutrality”.

Japan reverses policy of phasing out nuclear energy amid global fuel shortage, climate change

Japan has adopted a new policy promoting greater use of nuclear energy to ensure stable electricity supply amid global fuel shortages and reducing carbon emissions, in a major reversal of plans to phase out nuclear power. phased out after the Fukushima crisis.

Main attractions:

  • Japan plans to maximize existing nuclear reactors by restarting as many as possible
  • The policy reversal argues that nuclear power provides a stable output and plays a “critical role”
  • One survivor of the Fukushima disaster says the new ruling is “extremely disappointing”

The new policy says that Japan must maximize the use of existing nuclear reactors by restarting as many as possible and extending the operating life of older reactors beyond the 60-year limit. and by developing next-generation reactors to replace them.

Anti-nuclear sentiment and safety concerns surge in Japan after the 2011 Fukushima disasterand since then, restart approvals have been gradually made to stricter safety standards.

Utility companies have applied to restart 27 reactors over the past decade. Seventeen have passed safety checks and only 10 have continued to operate.

That is in line with Japan’s previous plan to phase out nuclear power by 2030.

In a reversal, The new policy says nuclear power provides steady output and plays “an important role as a primary source of carbon-free load energy.” in achieving supply stability and carbon neutrality” and committed to “sustaining future uses of nuclear energy”.

The Council also approved a plan to make renewable energy Japan’s main energy source and further promote hydrogen and ammonia as well as offshore wind and other forms of energy to promote decarbonisation, providing resiliency and economic security.

I’m not sure I believe in Japan’s additional plan to make renewables “Japan’s main energy source”.

Japan’s leaders seem to enjoy mocking the West’s green stories, and sometimes seem to try to push the boundaries, to see how much the West’s nonsense green stories will swallow up. For example, when they provides “climate finance” loans to India, Bangladesh and Indonesia to build new coal plants.
