Jaime Munguia didn’t hesitate in the slightest when he was approached with the opportunity of a lifetime.

In 2018, Gennadiy Golovkin began preparing for the highly anticipated match against Canelo Alvarez. Just a few months ago, in September 2017, Golovkin believed he was given a rough deal when he first played Alvarez. Although their contest was concluded to be a split decision draw, both sides agreed to run things back up immediately.

But, with just about a month left before their sequel took place, Alvarez was suspended for six months for testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol. With Alvarez not showing up, Golovkin managed to take down the undefeated Jaime Munguia. Although the Mexican-born player was willing to join at short notice, the Nevada State Athletic Commission refused to sanction their match due to a combination of Munguia’s age and lack of experience at the highest level.

Since then, things have changed drastically in Munguia’s life. At 25, the Mexican product has registered several knockout wins at the highlight-reel level and faces stiffer competition. Munguia is also the proud owner of the 154-pound WBO crown and is now considered a top middleweight contender.

At the age of 40, Golovkin seems to have leveled off. The current IBF middleweight champion has had mixed results since receiving their first defeat to Alvarez in their rematch. However, even though Golovkin showed his boxing mortality in the late hours, Munguia believes a confrontation between them will produce intriguing results.

Munguia told a group of reporters: “Yes, I was very interested then and I still care now. “It will be a fun fight and everyone will love it. It will be an entertaining fight. ”

Before Munguia can begin to work out his ability to take on Golovkin, he will first need to handle business against undefeated rival D’Mitrius Ballard. The two are expected to face off on February 19. If Munguia does what many are expecting, he could turn his attention to the IBF belt holder.

As for Golovkin, the 40-year-old could return to the negotiating table with Munguia, as long as he puts more gold on his belt first. Originally, the future Hall of Famer was set to take on middleweight champion Ryota Murata on December 29, at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, Murata’s home ground.

But while Golovkin was completing an arduous training camp and preparing to hit the road, his match against Murata was postponed due to increased concerns surrounding the COVID-19 omicron variant. To contain the outbreak, Japan has enacted a new travel ban that prevents foreigners from visiting.

Although news of a new deal has not yet surfaced, promoter Eddie Hearn believes the pair could go head to head in March or April.
