Jaecoo J7 PHEV previewed in Malaysia – 1.5 TDi with 347 PS/525 Nm, 88 km EV range; DC, V2L charging

The Jaecoo J7 PHEV which was first launched at Auto China 2024 in Beijing last month was also displayed at the recent Malaysia Autoshow 2024 where the brand also previewed its all-electric J6.

According to Jaecoo, under the bonnet of the J7 PHEV is a 1.5-liter TGDi gasoline engine with a thermal efficiency of 44.5%. The engine is mated to a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) with an electric motor at the front, combining to deliver a combined output of 347 horsepower and 525 Nm of torque.

For comparison, ICE version of Jaecoo J7 Equipped with a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that produces 197 horsepower and 290 Nm of torque, transmitted to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The reserve power provided by the J7 PHEV allows the plug-in hybrid SUV to travel up to 88 km on battery power alone, while the full hybrid has a claimed fuel consumption of 4.9 l/ 100 km, or 20.4 km per liter. Running in full hybrid mode, Jaecoo says the J7 PHEV can achieve a combined range with a full 60-litre fuel tank and fully charged battery of more than 1,200km.

What sets the Jaecoo J7 PHEV apart from most plug-in hybrid vehicles is its DC fast charging capability, demonstrated by the presence of the CCS2 charging port on the J7 PHEV. Its electrical capabilities also include V2L (truck), which provides external power to on-board devices.

While specific details about the J7 PHEV are still scarce, it seems the plug-in hybrid is getting closer to making its way to the Malaysian market, as the show car is right-hand drive . The dashboard architecture is carried over from the pure ICE-powered J7, where the 10.25-inch driver’s instrument display is accompanied by a 14.8-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment display. .

The notable difference of the J7 PHEV cabin lies in the center console, with the omission of the gear lever on the petrol variant, with the pair of cupholders now placed side by side instead of parallel vertically. The drive mode dial on the gasoline J7 is now part of the simplified button array on the J7 PHEV.

At its preview in January this year, the Jaecoo J7 was estimated to be priced around RM150k for the FWD variant and from RM160k for the AWD variant in petrol guise. What do you think about the J7 plug-in hybrid?
